I voted arbitrarily, but I think it depends on at what hour you can imagine yourself being up and going about business of any sort. 4 am is the earliest I could get up and still consider that I actually had sort of a night's sleep, so I picked 4. Everything before that, while technically morning, is really nighttime.

That's diametrically opposed to my understanding of "the wee small hours of the morning". The point is that the "wee small hours of the morning" ARE really nighttime, or at least night-time to the majority of the population who keep regular working hours.

I chose "other answer".

The wee hours of the morning occur between midnight and the hour of the wolf.
"The Hour of the Wolf" is the hour between night and dawn. It is the hour when most people die. It is the hour when the sleepless are haunted by their deepest fear, when ghosts and demons are most powerful.

I chose "no precise time." Obviously, the wee hours are whenever you have to get up in the middle of the night to wee. The fact that you may not always have to get up to wee in the night, or that you may not necessarily wake up at the same time each night to wee, proves the arbitrariness of the term. Not drinking close to bedtime can have significant effect.

It's whenever you wake up to take a wee!

No but seriously.
I'm usually up til 1 AM so for me the wee hours are when I start feeling guilty about staying up so late. 2, 3, 4.

I would prefer to stay awake til 3 every night and then sleep in, but that's a whole 'nother topic.

These 3 posts were almost simultaneous-- must have been some weird synchronicity going on.

Edited to point out that great minds think alike....

As a night shift worker, it's 4am for me. That's about the time that the eyelids droop and it seems the shift will never end.

Fantastic album, the last by Steppenwolf before the nastiness started.

on a 24 hour clock, midnight
on a 12 hour clock, 1

Although a strong case could be made for Caraluna's interpretation.
