I'm proud of all of you for not completely crossing the line on this topic. Its only a matter of time though.

Cock up your Beaver is a nice tune, too.

Robert Burns, 1791

When first my brave Johnie lad came to this town,
He had a blue bonnet that wanted the crown;
But now he has gotten a hat and a feather,
Hey, brave Johnie lad, cock up your beaver!

2. Cock up your beaver, and cock it fu' sprush,
We'll over the border, and gie them a brush;
There's somebody there we'll teach better behaviour,
Hey, brave Johnie lad, cock up your beaver!

It's a subtle reference to cow bells.

I'd rather be atop the foothills than beneath them.

Liam O'Flynn introduces "Kitty got a clinking" by saying that Seamus Ennis used to define "clinking" as "an intimate act of warm affection". :o

It is not innuendo, but a social comment on the supplanting of the hand loom weavers by steam driven looms (aka steam jenny).

Thanks for being pedantic, David. And yes, I know that the tune was originally Scottish. The "bang" version of the title seems to be much more common in Irish versions of the tune. I had no idea about the connection to steam loom...It would seem that most people playing the tune these days aren't aware of this subtle reference...

Hi Sporting Pitchfork

A version of the song to go with the tune.

At Willie's wedding on the green
The lassies, bonnie witches
Were a' dress'd oot in aprons clean
And braw white Sunday mutches
Auld Maggie bade the lads tak' tent
But Jock would no believe her
But soon the fool his folly kent
For Jenny dang the weaver

Jenny dang, Jenny dang
Jenny dang the weaver
But soon the fool his folly kent
For Jenny dang the weaver

At ilka country dance or reel
Wi' her he would be bobbin'
When she sat doon, he sat doon
And tae her would be gabbin'
Where'er she gaed, baith but 'n' ben
The coof would ne'er leave her
Aye kecklin' like a clockin' hen
But Jenny dang the weaver

Jenny dang, Jenny dang
Jenny dang the weaver
Aye kecklin' like a clockin' hen
But Jenny dang the weaver

Quo' he my lass, tae change my mind
In troth I needna swither
You've bonnie een and if you're kind
I'll never seek anither
He humm'd and haw'd, the lass cried Peugh!
And bade the coof no deave her
Syne snapped her fingers lap and leugh
And dang the silly weaver

Jenny dang, Jenny dang
Jenny dang the weaver
Syne snapped her fingers lap and leugh
And dang the silly weaver
