Finally Circular Breathing on Whistles !!

Post by hatao »

Hi,everybody.

I had been working on learning the circular breathing for few years,
and finally mastered on Tin Whislte(also low whistles).

Here are some tracks I recorded recently.

1. Eleanor Plunkett
http://www.irishflute.info/mp3/01.mp3

2. Reels (Dunmore Lasses - Green Mountain)
http://www.irishflute.info/mp3/02.mp3

3. Jigs
http://www.irishflute.info/mp3/03.mp3

4.Air"Mna Eireann" to Reels (same tune as no.2)
http://www.irishflute.info/mp3/04.mp3

In my view, basically whistle/flute tequnique is built with
the idea of Piping technique.
We do cuts/taps rolls,so why not the Circular Breathing?

I tried it,and knew I could do any whistle/flute technique
'with' the Circular Breathing.like tounging, throating,of cource
piping ornamentations.

I also tried Circular Breathing on the flute ,but it requires
so much air to produce a powerful Irish tone,so I can only play
the long note on the high register. But in few years I will...

I am also trying playing 2,3 whistles with the Circular Breathing

Please let me hear your opinion about using curcluar breating in
Irish traditional music.

I have read about it on the book (didgeridoo ,trampet or something) and
I knew the idea.

So,you can read much about how Circular Breathing works.
And I will advice that you should start with straw and then harmonica.
Whistle require much aire than them.

So,start from straw - harmonica - tin whistle - F low whistle -
D low whistle - piccolo - flute !!

すばらし!

Seriously!

There was a current discussion about this here not too long ago.

I believe the conclusion was that it wasn't useful for ITM and probably too difficult for flute.

I feel your experiment has proven that conclusion as incorrect at least for whistle.

Its one thing to talk... quite another thing to actually do.

I look forward to your flute experiments!

I would love to learn to do circular breathing, but I am already trying to do so many other things, it will probably remain a dream for me.

Hatao,
Your playing is an inspiration.

Wow! Great playing. I would never have thought CB was possible on a whistle. Do you have a video we can watch of your amazing playing?

Wow. Now I'll have to do my best to forget that this is even possible. I just sat blowing into a straw for 30 minutes and still don't get it. Yup, just forgetting that it's possible will probably help restore some self-respect.

Pretty amazing stuff that CB you're doing. Are you also able to take breaths whenever you want and then continue back into the CB? It' just that I think it would be a handy tool to be able to use CB for long passages but I wouldn't like to eliminate taking breaths completely as they add interest to a tune, just like any other ornament or variation.

Hatao, my friend ... Please return to your home planet immediately. You are making the rest of us earth people look very bad. :-)

That is amazing. World-class technique. Roland Kirk territory. I'm speechless, or at least breathless.

Awesome! I dont get how you can do it....
I can figure out the concept for the air circuit in a car (although "breathing" would not be appropriate)... but not for a human being!

I thought breathing meant successive lungs inflation/deflation, but how can you inhale and exhale at the same time?

Anyhow, fantastic result on the whistle!

Pascal.
