Taking a UK citizenship test

Post by avanutria »

But I'm not eligible for citizenship till at least next year.

However, the test in question, the "Life in the UK" test, is now a requirement for all people wishing to have indefinite leave to remain in the country - in other words, not be naturalised citizens but not be depending on a visa in order to stay in the country.

My test is at 10 AM on September 15th - tomorrow. WIth any luck I'll be done by quarter past 10. It's only 24 questions long and most other native English speakers don't struggle with it too terribly much, as long as they've studied. Which I have.

The good news is I find out whether or not I passed before I leave the test centre!

Those of you wishing to find out more can go to http://www.lifeintheuktest.gov.uk/ (the official site) or http://www.lifeintheuk.net/ (one of manny unofficial ones).

Good luck to you, Mrs. Milner. You're an extremely intelligent person. I don't doubt at all you'll pass with flying colors... hmm... better make that colours.

I am confident that if you have studied you will do just fine. I'll bet you anything you'll get 100%.

One thing that I didn't like too much is the picture of the supervisor.
He looks like a nice person, but he seems to look sort of anxious or really intense or something.
The picture would not put me at ease if I were reading about what I had to do to take the test.
Maybe he is looking impartial, neutral, hmm.

Best of luck to you. I know you won't need it!

The way that man looks at me makes me feel really inadequate. He just looks severely disappointed in me.

Tell us something.: "Tell us something" hits me a bit like someone asking me to tell a joke. I can always think of a hundred of them until someone asks me for one. You know how it is. Right now, I can't think of "something" to tell you. But I have to use at least 100 characters to inform you of that.

Good Luck, Bethy! Not that luck is an issue. :)

And good news: U.S. Residency is no longer a requirement for a free night's stay at Wilsons' Bed and Breakfast, if you two ever get up this way again.

Avanutria, if you are married to a British citizen, you would think that that in itself should qualify you for permanent residency, regardless of any permits or testing.

One would think that, but it's not true. There have been so many problems with sham marriages that there are now tons of expensive hoops to jump through.

I have now passed the Life in the UK test. :D Now I have to get a new passport in my married name (well it's not a requirement, just makes it a lot easier later on), then wait till January while raising £750 (the fee for ILR) and then I can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

THEN I can start thinking about citizenship.

Hehe, yeah.

Here are the questions I remember. There were 24 and I had to get 75% right. They don't tell you how many you got, just whether you passed or failed.

1) Who is the Head of State?
2) How many MPs are in Parliament?
3) What is the largest ethnic minority in the UK?
4) What is the largest religion in the UK after Christianity?
5) True or False: the National Health Service provides free health care to all UK citizens.
6) True or False: NHS Direct can provide medical advice over the phone for certain conditions.
7) At which two locations can a Health Visitor visit your new baby?
8) In what two ways can you obtain admission to the visitor's gallery of the House of Commons?
9) Which two of the following four holidays are Christian?
10) What is the lowest age that a child can work without a licence?
11) What percentage of the UK workforce is female?
12) True or false: Scottish banknotes are legal tender in the UK
13) Is cannabis legal or illegal in the UK?
14) At what age do children in England begin taking national tests?

1) Who is the Head of State?
The Queen
2) How many MPs are in Parliament?
475
3) What is the largest ethnic minority in the UK?
Indian
4) What is the largest religion in the UK after Christianity?
(assuming Christianity includes catholicism) Muslim
5) True or False: the National Health Service provides free health care to all UK citizens.
True (free at the point of service anyway)
6) True or False: NHS Direct can provide medical advice over the phone for certain conditions.
True
7) At which two locations can a Health Visitor visit your new baby?
*guessing* GP's office and your home
8) In what two ways can you obtain admission to the visitor's gallery of the House of Commons?
By appointment or at the invitation of an MP
9) Which two of the following four holidays are Christian?
The first two :D
10) What is the lowest age that a child can work without a licence?
16
11) What percentage of the UK workforce is female?
50
12) True or false: Scottish banknotes are legal tender in the UK
Legal tender is a solicitor's distinction that isn't relevent. However they are worth the same as English notes. Their acceptance in exchange for goods and services is up to the individual parties involved as they are agreeing a contract and anything can be used to pay for it. Generally they should be accepted but it's still funny for my English friend to make me pay for the takeaway when I'm visiting.
13) Is cannabis legal or illegal in the UK?
Illegal
14) At what age do children in England begin taking national tests?
8

So how'd I do?
