Pipers who fiddle and fiddlers who pipe

Post by meemtp »

Idle curiosity really, no practical purpose. I'm curious as to how many "name" pipers double on fiddle and vice versa...this has come up a few times and as a fiddle player myself, long before I took up the pipes, I'm wondering how common it its. Here's the list of fiddling pipers that I know of:

Willie Clancy
Martin Rochford (or would he be considered a fiddler that played the pipes?)
Peadar O'Laughlin
Seamus Ennis
Joseph McGlaughlin
Robbie Hannan (doesn't play the fiddle these days but according a recent interview w/ Seat Potts he was pretty good)

Fiddlers who play the pipes:

Willie Kelly
Caoimhin O Raghallaigh
Sean McGuire
Dermot McLaughlin

Tommy Keane
Tommy Martin
David Power
Jimmy O'Brien-Moran
Elliott Grasso
Mickey Dunne

There must be loads more?

Pat.

I forgot about Eliot Grasso, I didn't even know he played fiddle until I saw a video of him and Sean McComiskey.

Maine's own Tom Wilsbach has also played both for 30+ years

Is fiddler Jimmy Power related to David Power? I always thought they must be, both from Waterford, and then the whole Tommy Kearny connection. That would explain a lot!

I asked Dave about that once. He says something like 15% of Waterford is named Power. Another 15% is Walsh I think.

There was an interview with Eugene O'Donnell in the 70s where the interviewer mentioned Tom Wilsbach playing about 15 different instruments, which Eugene didn't think sounded like a good idea.

Didn't know Jimmy O' played the fiddle. Huh! Peter Laban scrapes a bit, while Sara Cory pipes a bit. Aimee Nemeth? Sean MacAloon! Frankie Gavin and Joe Burke both play pipes I'm told. Tom Standeven.

Fiddle for me, too. It's nice to stand up and play music, there are all those nifty fiddle tunes as well, some of which are nice on the pipes as well. Novelty Hornpipe, anyone?

Tommy Reck played fiddle.
He and Tom Mulligan used to swap duties on pipes and fiddle when they played together.
