Neutrogena Hand Cream. (For the chapping, anyway... don't know about the callouses.) It's kind of thick and greasy, so you rub it in at night before you go to sleep, and in the morning your hands are like new.

I second the Neutrogena. I used to work in a flower shop. That stuff works wonders.

I've used this in times when my hands were chapped to the point of splitting and bleeding when I made a fist and it worked wonders:

Just one more suggestion : BADGER Healing Balm. Not sure how widely available it is but it works wonders for me. I use it at nightime and I've been crack free for quite a while.

What a co-oincidence. When I opened this thread guess what was in the advertising banner at the top of the page...

Never tried it though.

I have the same problem playing the pipes. The combination of pipemakeing, rock climbing and occassional gardening in the high desert really takes it's toll this time of year, especially rock climbing - it turns my hands into giant callouses, which is great at protecting the hands from the rock but lousy for pipe playing. I need to sand down the collouses on the finger pads.

I have used Bag Balm with good results for many years. The camphor in it is slightly antiseptic which helps minor cuts heal over. I have used Neutrogena Hand Cream and it works great to. My wife works in the Dermatology Department at the University and the Dermatologists all seem to recomend Neutrogema as being the most effective over-the-counter treatment.

Also not yet recommended are gloves.

Obviously, gloves in the garden. But I'm talking about overnight or some period of 20+ minutes of time during the day. Put them on after the lotion and you'll feel as soft as a baby's bottom when you take them off. It's good to shower, pat dry, file or other manicure, then lotion and gloves. They're made out of thin terry cloth like material and can be found in the manicure section of places like Target or wherever.

Professional manicures can help to jump start the process. And if you're a guy who cringes at the thought of a manicure, then think how soft your touch will be for your wife. You can also have her provide the manicure complete with hand and arm massage and manly lotions or oils. Here's one high-end example, offering MANicures and intensive callus treatment.

Of course, you could return the gift of massage with your newly smoothed hands before you head off to play, but that's between you and your spouse. I haven't heard of anyone I know of complaining about getting a massage, though.
