tunes to play with "The Rolling waves"?

Post by claudine »

Can you suggest 1-2 jigs that would make a good set with "The Rolling Waves"?

X: 1
T: Rolling Waves, The
M: 6/8
L: 1/8
R: jig
K: Dmaj

I start with The Lonesome Jig, into Munster Buttermilk, and then into The Rolling Wave.

At my session, we do Swallowtail > Rolling Waves > Rambling Pitchfork.

Aren't there at least two common jigs that get called "The Rolling Waves"?

They go really well together, the two rolling waves. (I was going to post "The Rolling Waves as a suggested second tune, but colomon beat me to it)

Also Sport (and then either wave).

Also The Hag with the Money and the Hag at the Churn (these two then either rolling wave).

There are two, at least. The two I know are the one claudine has posted in abc, plus The Lonesome Jig is also called The Rolling Wave by some people. That's why I put them into a set. They are too similar to be put side by each, so I break it up with Munster Buttermilk in the middle.

Dever the Dancer, while it is a slip jig and not a double jig, fits in nicely after the Rolling Wave (a.k.a The Humours of Trim). I once attended flute classes at the Siamsa school of Irish music in Montreal. We learned this set to play at the end of semester concert and it went over well.

I've been putting the Cat in the Corner afterwards. I like how you can lean on the f in the transition.

I like to follow it with An Phis Fhliuch aka The Choice Wife, etc. That's a five parter so I don't add a third tune. This set gives you a nice key change (Dmaj to what looks like Gmaj but is really Dmixolydian I think) to liven things up a bit.

Really? How's the fifth part go?

Well, the way it seems to be played around here (as well as how the notes are presented on thesession.org) the 5th part is pretty much identical to the 2nd part. So I guess you could call it a 4-parter but played ABCDB.

You're right. I've always thought of that as a four-part tune (I am numerically challenged).
