Death of Whirlpool (was "Death of Amana")
My 4 year old 25.3 cubic foot Amana side-by-side with the water & ice thing in the door was found dead today in my kitchen. Based on the core temperature of the corpse and the condition of various tissues within it, I'd estimate the time of death as about 36 hours ago.
Lights are still on (but, I think, only when I open the door). So, I'm going with failed compressor as cause of death.
And, of course, I discovered this upon returning from my neighborhood grocery store. So, I found a couple of ice chests, bought bags of ice, and will try to extend the life on some of the perishables. Gave away a bag of chicken still pretty firm and icy to the neighbors and cooked two other bags. We have a freezer downstairs. I'm hoping nobody gets salmonella behind this deal on account of the suckiness of that.
Hm... Repair or replace. I'm figuring a $300 repair job and I'm seeing a similar unit at Sears for $999.
Darn it.

How sad. It's always sad when such a cool character passes on.

Let's see. If I charge you guys $25 a joke, a long would it take for me to raise the $ for the new fridge?

No joke, I'm almost envious. That's a big enough fridge, alright, but somehow in the painful, protracted context of putting a kitchen into our house (thus replacing the 1958(?) version,) we got a good deal on appliances. I mean a really good deal. So we have one of those stainless steel, shallowish but w-i-d-e monsters (no special dispensers on the door, though,) and it fits into its own special shallowish but w-i-d-e space between a cabinet and a load-bearing wall.
Last year when it was acting up I priced new ones. It appears that I might be able to get a workable replacement for roughly $5K. Nevermind. It's fixed. We're nice to it.

- Tell us something.: I've picked up the tinwhistle again after several years, and have recently purchased a Chieftain v5 from Kerry Whistles that I cannot wait to get (why can't we beam stuff yet, come on Captain Kirk, get me my Low D!)

Duder, if you're going to use the 'f' word, go for the gold, buddy.

How old is the refrigerator? It may be an energy hog and replacing it might even save you money in the long run.
Edit, Oops didn't see that it was four years old. Only about one third the normal life time of a refrigerator. Is it off of the warranty?
