That one might just be my dream flute as well. How do we settle this?
Well, it's so light and well balanced I could almost toss it to you from here for a test drive. But I won't.

Flutes - Never too many?

Post by cquick »

Flutes I have (most bought used):

Gilles Lehart 5 key (bought this direct from him in his workshop in Brittany)

Copley Keyless (fairly new)

Copley 5 key (vintage 2002) and probably my favorite

Ormiston 4 key

Hervieux et Glet keyless in Eb

Eamonn Cotter Keyless

M & E keyless (older stlye with split embouchure and rings) (this is the flute that got me hooked)

Flutes I'd like to try:

Murray, Hamilton

OK I'll play.

An Altus silver flute, why did I buy this? I never play it.

A Rudall Rose 7 key patent head

A Wilkes 8 key. My favourite flute

A Murray 3 key.

A Doyle Keyless

A Boaz Berney Traverso.

On order, an Aebi 8 key Boxwood Bb

I should sell on the Altus as it's a very good flute which deserves better than to be left unplayed.

I have a gazillion flutes most days and can't think of a flute by a modern maker I haven't owned multiple incarnations of except for a Wilkes.

I only consider one of them "mine"... My much-beloved McGee GLP with Rounded rectangle embouchure.

I also "own" a Noy boxwood head for my cheap Yamaha. The flute was $125 on eBay, the head $1100 from Peter. Add them together and you get a concert flute that sounds like the $5000 ones.

Flutes I would own (were I not a strict monogamist) are too numerous to list.

There are several flutes I really regret having parted with.

Hey Doc,

I'm guessing that Keyless Byrne I just got from you is one of them!

What a fantastic flute.

I've owned a GLP, but not in blackwood. Somehow I think I would have liked it more in blackwood. I played a blackwood one some months back and I liked it much better.

OK, OK.

Flutes that have me:

Keyless boxwood Olwell Pratten
Keyless blackwood Murray
6-key boxwood Murray
4-key blackwood Ormiston
6-key blackwood McGee Pratten (rounded rectangles embouchure)

6-key cocus Hamilton Eb
Keyless blackwood Gallagher Bb
Keyless Delrin Forbes
Olwell bamboo F

On order:

Keyed body for boxwood Olwell

Dream Flutes (but really just dreams):

6-key Murray or Cotter Eb
A tuneable F flute (I like Dave Copley's a lot)
Perhaps a 6-key blackwood Murray; I may prefer the tone of blackwood, I think, but here I am in Boxwood Land :-)
Deja Fu: The sense that somewhere, somehow, you've been kicked in the head exactly like this before.

Ah well.

6-keyed cocus Aebi in D
Hamilton keyless (to be upgraded to 6-keyed around Christmas) in D
-with an extra middle piece in Eb
Keyless delrin Seery in D
Quite-a-few-keyed very old Nach-Meyer in D-ish
Keyed-galore silver-plated Gemeinhardt in whatever-pitch-you-wish

Daydreaming of:
Flutes in different keyes, F and Bb to begin with
Perhaps having some time alone with some of Sam Murray's work
