Tell us something.: I caught the trad bug listening to Liam O'Flynn. Started on whistle, then moved to pipes. Tricky Basmatis, but I love 'em.

Two votes:

"Ann Maguire's Silver Wedding" (John McCusker)

"Inion ni Scannlain" (Lunasa)

Whilst not an Irish tune I love Ashokan Farewell. It's my favorite sad song to play on whistle.

Although I havn't figured it out for whistle The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda will always make me cry.

I nominate Young Ned of the Hill played by Joannie
(did I miss it? I always forget its other name..).

In the Probably-Non-ITM category, how 'bout Flook's Glass Polka?

The basis guts of the song may be found here

then adapt some of the notes to make it sound as it should from recordings

I know that this is a little different, but we would suggest "Absent Friends" by Kevin Crawford (Lunasa) Just a great, great melody.

I know it's not an Irish tune but Diamantina Drover by Redgum is heart breaking as a whistle solo.
May those who love me, love me.
May those who don't love me grow to love me.
and for all the rest, may god turn their knees so I know them by their limp

Tell us something.: "Tell us something" hits me a bit like someone asking me to tell a joke. I can always think of a hundred of them until someone asks me for one. You know how it is. Right now, I can't think of "something" to tell you. But I have to use at least 100 characters to inform you of that.

An Raibh Tu Ag An GCarraig (Were You at the Rock, in english). Quite possibly the most lonesome, tear-jerking song that can be played on the penny whistle. You can see Seamus Ennis playing it on the uilleann pipes here:

The lady that played whistle in Redgum is solely responsible for me taking up playing the whistle,
After watching a live performance, years ago i was literally blown away,
for me she made the whole performace,
the band redgum has many great thought provoking songs,
-I was only 19, still tugs on heart strings,
I have just recently finished teaching my 11 yr old daughter the words to Poor Ned, which she has a fascination about, the whistle solo in that is nice also
