...err..this is what I thought.chrisoff wrote:If it's a normal meal that doesn't require a special spoon why in the hell would you use a spoon? Surely a fork and knife are sufficient?
Wanderer...does your diet consist primarily of soft boiled eggs and toasted soldiers perchance?? If so....the teaspoon is your friend. ..if not, you've totally lost me....chrisoff wrote:For doing what!? I really don't understand why you need a spoon at all for most normal meals. Am I missing some fundamental part of the cuisine experience here?Wanderer wrote: We typically use the teaspoon for most meals.

The spoon that usually sits to the right of the knife was the teaspoon. The larger spoon used for dishing up the mashed taters is a tablespoon. That's all we had at our house when I was growing up, and I maintain that tradition.
At my paternal grandparents' house, however, there were soup spoons and desert spoons and special big spoons for serving the taters. These all lived in a special lined box in the big cupboard. But these grandparents were Episcopalians, and I thing there is some kind of canonical requirement that they have a diversity of spoons.
Note: The teaspoon is not the appropriate utensile to use when eating Alpha-Bits out of a mixing bowl. Any cereal, when eaten from a mixing bowl, requires a tablespoon.

Re: Spoons
Growing up, we always put a teaspoon at the place setting, which was rarely used. Don't bother now because I hate washing up to begin with.Walden wrote:I lived enough years in that portion of the world where cutlery isn't especially customary. I'm just curious whether soup spoons or teaspoons are more commonly used in an informal place setting. We've always used teaspoons.
I'm assuming those who eat with tablespoons have pretty big mouths.
Your average modern set of utensils from the major retailers does not have an in-between size between a tea spoon and what I think is a serving spoon (not quite as big as a true tablespoon in volume tho). So, unless you buy a set that includes a special round soup spoon, you are either stuck with a dinky teaspoon or a too large spoon to eat soup and cereal.
It's really not a bad question, considering above.
How do you prepare for the end of the world?
