I think I did something completely insane

Post by PallasAthena »

I bought a clay flute.

Has anyone had any experience with them? The maker demonstrated them and they sounded pretty nice, but I think it will take some getting used to.

Anyway, even if it doesn't work out, it looks sort of nice...

I'm picturing an asylum or sanitarium somewhere where the patients shuffle around in hospital gowns playing clay flutes. Scary!

No, never played one. But if it can play a scale, there'll be plenty of ways to pester it. Give us a report!

I played a raku-fired ceramic flute down at the music shop. It was easy to play, sounded nice, and of course the raku glaze is beautiful. I don't think you're crazy, but I can't for the life of me figure out how they can build one. The clay shrinks as it dries and is fired. You'd have to really know what you are doing to know what size it'll be when all done.

In what key?
If it is in F#, that would be nuts.
Is it ergonomic like these?

Doesn't sound too crazy. Just don't drop it.

Jack Bradshaw sent me a porcelin flute in the mail, and like he mentioned, it was broken in the mailing. However, I managed to glue it together, and now it plays nicely with a strong, clear tone in the key of G. As you can see from the photo, it is a chromatic flute with five holes for the right hand.

Hi,
I also have one in F. It has a nice brite tone, I don't think the intonation is very good, but it is a fun little flute even though.
Don't drop it on your foot, more like! :boggle:

No.

Mine was made by this old Dutch fellow about 25 years ago.

He's back in the Nederlands now. Cubitt here on CnF is in close contact with the old gentleman from what I understand.

I'll post a pic tomorrow.

Mine too is quite brite and very loud.

The intonation is quite good enough for a cylindrical flute.

All the tone holes are the same size with under cutting.

The emb. cut is a mod'd oval. More "pill" shaped slightly.

The edges blow/back are at 30˚ off angle from the flute CL.
