Dale, at this terrible time my thoughts are with you, with your friend Darrell, and with all who put so much effort into his case.

I am seriously disapppointed in our system at times like this. Far too much was in question in this case for this man to be put to death...

May his soul fly free and his friends and loved ones carry on the cause and find peace.

Thanks to you all. I was not able to go near the prison, but I found a hill a mile or so away and was able to sit on my car and view the prison during the last hour.

Darrell was very much aware of the support he received from many quarters even, as it turns out, by some who generally support the death penalty.

Thanks again for your support and your frienship.

Over the years I was able to get some books of poetry to Darrell. I introduced him to Robert Bly, who became his favorite. I'm told he read a lot of Bly in his last days. I emailed this one to Esther, who read it to him on the telephone.

Dawn

Some love to watch the sea bushes appearing at dawn,
To see night fall from the goose wings, and to hear
The conversations the night sea has with the dawn.

Dale, that poem seems very appropriate; it feels gently melancholy and bittersweet to me.
