Coming in late on this but I have one question. Is your water bill just for water, or is it a combined water and sewage bill as is so common nowadays? Usually on combined bills the sewage portion is based on a percentage or multiple of the base water rate usage. If it is a combined bill you may be able to get some relief by showing that the unused water did not enter the waste stream and therefore did classify as sewage.

For example, locally if you fill a swimming pool this will casue the water usage to jump, but they will deduct the amount of pool water prior to calculating the sewage portion of the bill. But this isn't advertised, and you have to ask (read that as demand) this credit.

It won't lower it back to the normal usage charges, but may take out some of the sting ...

I've nothing substantive or comforting to add, I just had to say that
this is the first C&F thread I've read in which the accompanying
banner ad offered "Totalizing water meters" (and other flowrate
instrumentation).

The company in question offers a line of Ultrasonic Vortex Flow-
meters (awesome!) called "Flosonex". Sounds like a product name
that's usually followed by a list of horrible side effects...

Well, I just got the best, most amazing news!

I was literally out the door on my way to walk down to the post office to pay the bill (we don't have house-to-house mail delivery here) -- as in the door was open, the leash was on the dog, the bills and my wallet were in my hand -- when the phone rang. I almost just let it go, but then I worried that it might be my husband with an emergency, so I answered it. It was the Mount Hermon water department. They'd done some talking, called around to other area water providers to find out what their policies were, and the upshot is, they reduced my bill substantially! By almost half! Yes, it's still higher than my usual bill would be, but that seems fair, and it means that I don't have to use my birthday money! Even better, they now have a policy in place to deal with this kind of problem in the future.

Wow. How many utility companies can you think of that would do that on their own?

I actually sat down at the kitchen table (with the bewildered dog, still leashed, next to me) and wept with relief. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

It's just for water, with the exception of a yearly roads assessment and occasional additions for improvement of the water system. We're all on septic up here...none of the San Lorenzo Valley has sewer service. On the other hand, if it had been going into the sewage system, we'd have known about it pretty quickly, because the septic system would have backed up (that would have been a mixed blessing, for sure! )

In North Carolina we had the sewage/water situation on our water bills, though, so I know what you're talking about.

Just when you're about to lose all faith in people doing the right thing, they go and do the right thing. Fantastic!

Glad to see some good news on this finally.

The dog did eventually get his walk though right?

 Yes, he did. He just had to wait for me to void one check and write another one.
