I took up the pipes and joined this forum to get in touch with my inner surly child.
My therapist says I'm making good progress and should someday be a bona fide crank.

I'm a bit disappointed in the new tagline below the link to the Uilleann Pipe Forum, "A forum about Uilleann (Irish) pipes and the people who play them." I think that an addition to the previous version, along the lines of : "A forum about Uilleann (Irish) pipes and the surly, but sensitive (and a bit petulant) people who play them." would have rounded things off nicely.
If piper's can't take a joke, and a bit of good-natured (or otherwise) poking, how are they going to get through their first 20 years of piping???

aghast
Bring back "surly" in the tag-line! It's what keeps us flute forum folks feeling superior for the gentility of our discourse (pause for big larfs).

My wife, a fiddler, makes the distinction as "Spit instruments" (whistles and flutes) and "Arm pit instruments" (pipes).djm wrote:If flute players have an embouchure, do uilleann pipers have an armpiture?

Well, at least not solid plans.ceadach wrote:Indeed surly is in the eye of the beholder.

I agree that the Forum Description is a bit tapioca now. What, if not "surly" would each of you suppose?
"A forum about Uilleann Pipes and the BLANK (people) who play them."
Leather-necked?
Obstreperous?
Wackos?
Masochists?
Pompous arses?
I tend to agree with Cynth that the term "dick wad" is in appropriate. It overuse has lessened its meaning.
There's and old Irish saying that says pretty much anything you want it to.

How about "Richard Wad" instead? - or Richard Weed, Richard Less, Richard Head, Richard Face, Richard Breath, (I could just go on an on) .....Scott McCallister wrote:I tend to agree with Cynth that the term "dick wad" is in appropriate. It overuse has lessened its meaning.

Not withdrawing??? What do you call this:Dale wrote:Oh, listen. I'm just apologizing for offending people by calling them surly. I'm not withdrawing from calling them surly!
I'm shocked. I really am. This description sounds...I just can't describe it. Sort of pre-packaged and boring---kind of Velveeta if you get my drift. *shiver*A forum about Uilleann (Irish) pipes and the people who play them.
