Piping stylings of Jean-Yves lePape...

Post by straycat82 »

What are your opinions of his playing? He is certainly a very crisp player but his approach to the trad tunes sounds a little rushed to me. I almost feel exhausted listening to the entire album in one go.

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

I agree. They were nice tunes, but they seemed to just keep coming, with little pause, beat, articulation difference... I don't know how to describe it other than fast and furious. I know what you mean by feelign exhausted!! :boggle:

"The Uilleann Pipes of Ireland" is the CD I have of his. Don't know if there are more. He certainly plays better than me, but I don't care for his style.

Yes, Uilleann Pipes of Ireland is the CD I was speaking of. I don't know if there are more. My cousin gave me the CD about a week ago and even though I am impressed with his skill on the instrument, I don't think he quite has his head wrapped around the tradition just yet... or maybe he's not aiming for that, I don't know anything about the fellow. His style almost sounds more like the tradition of the GHB, not really much lilt there.

Gawd that album cover is heinous!

I think it's a nice change from the Pure Drop stuff.

And which album cover?

Not impressed.

Say, does anybody else feel creeped out by the body-less arms playing the pipes?

Yes, creepy. The glow effect and the rainbow vomit color scheme doesn't do much for me either.

Yeah, the more I listen to this guy the more robotic it sounds. Just doesn't have much life to it.

Everyone has their own personal tastes. The polite way to express this
on the forum is, "doesn't suit my personal tastes." That way you don't
run the risk of insulting other people's personal tastes, even if it really
is a piece of sh.........

Nobody is talking poorly of your man. Discussing his piping on a pipe forum in an objective an honest matter is not something to be ashamed of.

Regarding the above two graphics:
They're both pretty bad, IMO. I'm a graphic artist so I'm very opinionated on this stuff. Were I in the presence of the creating artist, I'd be more constructive with my criticism. If someone else is going to be that offended that I don't have the same taste of visual art (or music for that matter) then I think they need to harden up a bit.
I hate stuff like this because it pushes that "Celtic" new-agey image that too many folks already associate with a music that is much more deserving of better associations... this kind of stuff is at home on an Enya album cover.
Sorry for the topic drift... I'm done picking on the the graphics now.
Back to the piping discussion.

I also didn't realise that "Titanic" was a musical tradition

Apologize Straycat, perhaps I've misunderstand ....

<<His style almost sounds more like the tradition of the GHB>> : you are right, Jean-Yves Le Pape is a GHB player too .

About these two covers , I think they are.......no, I can't say that ...
