Well, you see it often enough with GHBs...Rare with things that aren't getting covered in lung vapor all the time, though, I would imagine...

It's sold now, so.. what do you think: did someone take the file to that F hole or is it just a funny perspective?

I was thinking the same thing, Peter. Looks like you could fall into that hole! Must (I hope!) be a shadow thing.

I actually got out my own concert chanter (Kennedy, not Gallagher) and took a gander. I was thinking the same thing as you two.

You're both photographers, but it doesn't look like a perspective thing to me. Yikes!

Aren't Gallagher chanters a bit large-holed anyway? Never played one, just curious.

Hey Nyyaaa, welcome aboard.

This according to Paddy Moloney on Seth's chanter: "To me they have the nyyaaa, it's lovely." --Paddy Moloney

I'm looking at a Mark Hillmann chanter I have in the shop for reeding, and the F hole on it seems perspectively similar in size to the one on the Gallagher chanter.

I'm thinking it is an unaltered chanter and that shadows are playing tricks.

I think it's just the angle of the picture. Although, you could drive a car through the F# hole on my Bourke and Rowsome chanters.

I've been thinking lately that it'd be no harm if makers offered a choice.
I had a few tunes with a piano box player lately and my C# note was just out of tune.

I know all the theorys behind the natural intonation vs. equal temperament but what I want to know is WHY is this instrument, the most complex and newest developement on the bagpipe, still using a tuning system that just seems dated.

I think this may deserve a seperate thread.....
