Birdbrains' Aviary-- 11 photos
We've been working on this for more than a year and a half, and things are finally starting to come together!
The little yellow building is a free-standing garage. We insulated, put up wall board, painted the walls, stained the concrete floor, installed lights, and put up aviary mesh.
October 2005
greenhouse from a kit
east gable-- insulation, cinderblock
west gable-- ceiling panelled, partially finished mural
We finally start moving the birds in!!!
One section is for budgies. They love Kevin
the other section is for finches. Their favorite place is on this long branch
This is what you get under the long branch. To me this looks like one of Denny's astronomy pics
All this room to spread out, and what do they do?

I think I love Kevin too . He looks like a very nice fellow. I can't imagine how you all figured out what to do there, but those little birds sure have a lovely new home. Congratulations for getting such a big project done!

We named him Kevin just because we liked how it sounded. Then after we got into the bird hobby I was reading about saints and found this about Saint Kevin--Cynth wrote:I think I love Kevin too . He looks like a very nice fellow.

Sounds like we picked the right name!As with so many saints, Kevin has a rich mythology attached to him, some of which may be based in truth.... It was his habit to stand in the lake to pray, arms stretched out to the heavens. It is said that one day, a blackbird began to build a nest in one of his hands, and when he realised, he stood stock-still until the nest was finished, the eggs hatched and the young blackbirds able to fend for themselves... he is known as a patron saint of birds, and blackbirds in particular.

Excellent pictures, Carol! I absolutely love finches. We have American Goldfinches and I think House Finches here (at least in my yard...don't know what else). And the floor under the stick looks a lot like the floor under Éamon's highchair...well, except that his tends to be food rather than excrement

Nice Pix, Carol. A few jobs ago, the ladies in the accounts department used to keep finches. In the Office. I never really thought about what they did with them over the weekend. But they are cute birds. I miss them a little bit. But we have four cats in the house. There is no compatability.

Thanks very much, all, for taking a look at my "baby pictures"
This project has been dragging on so long! Showing you the pictures helps to make it seem more real. "Yes it really is done" ....well, almost done
Cynth, if we had known what we were doing... it would have taken half the time :groan:
Bonus-- the high, slanted ceiling makes for some interesting acoustics. When I play flute in there, even I sound good.
