I gave up pulling this stuff out of the dryer, but it gradually started to impinge on the dryer's efficiency, so went back to pulling it out.

We Jews do it differently. Istead of picking one thing to give up for several weeks, we give up EVERYTHING on Yom Kippur for one day: Instant Lent!

Lent
Discussing politics is like having a conversation with the ex. You know that no matter what the subject....it could be as innocent as what you had to eat for lunch....you know that they are going to somehow work your past sins into the conversation

I'm taking it up.

That's a Penance.

Well, as usual I fasted on Ash Wednesday, and I will fast on Good Friday as well. This year I'm also giving up wine (which is hard for me, because I'm the type who loves wine with every meal...yes, that includes champagne brunches!). Because I like to do a positive discipline as well as a fast for Lent, I've also made a commitment to work out every day.

In years past, I've done a variation on the Ramadan fast for Lent (no food from sunup to sundown, but I allowed myself liquids), but I can't really do that anymore for health reasons.

Whew, I wish......

Rather than giving up something, we were instructed at the service yesterday to "think more, pray more, study more, do more for someone else...."

For those who don't understand Lent, the basic premise is this: you're supposed to give up something that you love or cherish for 40 days before Easter (Sundays don't count), in order to more deeply sympathize (in a very small way) with Christ's suffering on the cross. That's it in a nutshell, so giving up religion or Lent doesn't really make sense. Here's a basic wikipedia page for those who want to read more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lent

I gave up dessert, but I broke that very quickly, sort of accidentally. I started over, but I still feel kind of guilty for it.
