What is your favourite confectionery?

Post by Innocent Bystander »

I am off chocolate. I learned that it aggravates my arthritis and makes my knees hurt. It sounds strange to me, but I found out that other people have the same condition. The Migraine triggers trigger other things than migraine: That's Chocolate, Coffee, Tomatoes, and Cheese. And Red Wine.

So, anyway, I don't crave chocolate especially, but I do have a sweet craving now. I satisfy it with Licquorice Allsorts (no-one else in my family likes them, so my stash is safe). And sometimes fudge.

I'm not so keen on mints, although my wife is mint-crazy. Mints are a big thing in the UK just now. The boiled sweet I miss is Brandy-balls - which is actually cinnamon and cassia. They're available in Ireland, and my sister sends me some from time to time, but you can't get them in England. In scotland you can get cinnamon balls, but they don't have the bite that the cassia gives. In England they do clove sweets, which are less-ish (i.e. not more-ish). At work they like wine gums.

I'm just curious as to the general preference. What sweets or candy do you go for?

Chocolates of various kinds. I don't know if they ship overseas at all, but my favorite candy is Reese's Peanut Butter Cup.

I missed out jelly beans, as you hardly ever see them in the UK. If your preference is for Jelly Beans, take the "Gummi Bear" option. I know they aren't the same, but I had to telescope the options as there is a limit to the number of options in a poll.

Bharfies are those Indian sweets that are similar to fudge. Pistachio Bharfies are the popular favourite.

Generally speaking I like my candies caffeinated.

Chocolate is not a "confection". It is a major food group unto itself. I consider an alergy to chocolate to be somewhat akin to an alergy to peanuts; another major food group on which I mainly survive.

Bharfies ... right, well, given the state of some peoples' economies ... :o (I'm such a retch )

Obviously, some of us were meant to survive, while others .... meh.

Depending on your definition, baklava (made with honey rather than rose water) served with Turkish coffee brewed with cardamom.

As for more basic flavors a nice caramel or butterscotch will usually beat out other flavors like horehound or vanilla.

I have no choice but to endorse this post 100%.

If there were a God, chocolate (along with Guinness) would be the ultimate proof of his existence.

That said, the Guinness flavoured chocolate sold in Ireland as a tourist product is a powerful argument in favour of capital punishment for absurdly cynical marketing...

What in the heck is a Parma Violet? I'm afraid that chocolate is the only candy that tempts me*, and the only candy that gives me a headache if I overindulge. Sometimes life is just not fair.

*though if you give me a roll of fruit flavored Life-Savers I'm likely to finish them off.

Any possibility of a dairy allergy (if it's milk chocolate)?
