Jon C Flutes

Post by Bojax »

I keep seeing these (the Jon C flutes) listed along with M&E and Seery as really nice beginner flutes, but I can't find any place that sells them. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks!

Tell us something.: I play the first flute Jon Cochran ever made but haven't been very active on the board the last 9-10 years. Life happens I guess...I owned a keyed M&E flute for a while and I kind of miss it.

If I didn't already have an M&E with keys, I would get a delrin flute from Jon. I have a wooden flute from him and every time I play it, I think what a wonderful flute it is.

I have one of Jon's derlin Prattens.

Powerful and reedy.

YERY well made.

Insane amount of flute for the money.

A "beginner" flute its not... beginners should have good instruments and a good instrument it is.

I got the derlin for ease of carry as I just toss it in my laptop bag... and my laptop never leaves my side... so now never does that flute.

He doesn't know it yet but Im going to ask him for blackwood... only I'm going to need a R&R AND a Pratten I fear.

Anyone have a Jon C. R&R?

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

I have to say that I was awfully impressed with Jon C.'s work when I had the chance to try one of his older flutes. How much better would his recent ones be, I wonder, yet it's hard to think one could improve on the one I tried! I'll echo Aanvil and say that I wouldn't go so far as to call them "beginner" flutes at all. They're darn good flutes. Financially more accessible, yes (which is no indicator of tonal quality in this case); and bless him for that.

I say get 'em while they're hot and Jon hasn't wised up, yet.

I think Jon took a vow of poverty!

He makes excellent custom flutes.

Jon's Pratten should have been my first flute. Pretty inside and out, easy to blow, and, in the hands of a better player, sound like a million bucks. In my hands, it's still pretty durn satisfying.

Good to deal with, too.

Does nice repairs and restorations, too.
Happily tooting when my dogs let me.

Here's hoping that Jon C catches the brass-key wave, if he decides to start making keyed flutes.

Tell us something.: I play flute, whistle and harp and have been a member on this board for many years. I have tended to be a lurker recently and just posted a response for the first time in quite awhile.

Yeah, but if flute-making became Jon's full-time job, would this board be where he'd come in his time off?

Thanks guys! Wow, some rave reviews! I pm'd Jon directly, but anybody have an idea of his price range for a polymer flute?

We try not to talk about it. It's embarrassing.

I wish that I was qualified to praise his flutes. I like the fact that someone that is qualified, has played my flute and gives it good marks. When I can set aside enough cash, I hope to special order a Delrin flute.
