I had dinner at a Chinese buffet this evening, and everything tasted good, but when I returned home, I found this on my computer:

Well, that's a joke and all, but I understand that Dog Lips are a real Chinese delicacy. Nobody would serve them to a westerner - Chinese are well aware of westerners' dog-meat taboo - and anyway, it's too expensive!

But I heard of a restaurant owner who was preparing for a family occasion when some enemy got wind of it and the restaurant was raided after a "tip-off". They found eight alsatian dog-heads in the fridge.
He was busted.

I didn't know that was still around. I remember seeing it a few years ago.
Thanks for the link.

The difference is that dogs are raised on farms as food in China, just as we would raise animals here for slaughter. When taken out of context, we get the idea that someone's dear house-pet had been abducted for gustatory purposes, when this is totally false. The Chinese regularly eat rats and snakes as well. Their saying is that anything that shows its back to the sun is fair game as human food.

If only Moses could have streamlined the idea like that!

Nice! :D
There's and old Irish saying that says pretty much anything you want it to.

That's concise. Arguably that standard includes sea creatures, too, in a way.

I knew a Chinese-American who related to me a saying from her mother: "The only thing with four legs that a Chinese won't eat is the table."

In principle, I have to admire such a lack of culinary taboos.

Asia has been dealing with overpopulation for centuries. Its not just their ethics regarding food that may seem so foreign to us, but their attitude to each other can strike us as pretty heartless as well. The difference is that they continue to survive, while we continue to engineer our own destruction. :D

We are now balanced on the razor's edge of a controversial subject.

Question: of all that you eat in a week, how many plants and animals are involved?

Biodiversity of diet, I think it's called.

The animals I consume eat and digest my plants for me ahead of time.

Efficiency of diet, I think it's called.
