Tenor drone...thingy

Post by lordofthestrings »

As you can see (if this posted right) there is indeed a "thingy" on the tenor drone. My question: what does said thingy do? Does thingy have a name? I've only seen a few sets with a thingy, and have never known what its function is. I presume thingy aids for tuning or something, but I don't know. :-?

Please help me solve the thingy mystery once and for all!

It's a pressure safety valve. It stops set exploding if you pump too hard.

(or it's to help slide the drone and tune it)

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

When you add the regulators it's use will become obvious - it is to help moving the top joint of the drone. A better designed mainstock with more room between the various pipes would seem a tidier solution

Some makers fit them some do not

Maybe it's there because if there were regulators on that set, the little drone would be completely surrounded by other pipes, and it'd be difficult to grasp to tune. Your fingers wouldn't fit around it, and it doesn't stick out from the other pipes because it's too short. So it's a little handle to grab onto to tune.

(oops, overlapping post...)

On this rather crowded set

the problem of reaching the tenor drone is solved by the addition of a metal tube to bring it out to where it can be reached

Interesting all three drones have 'H' ends to them - is it unique ?

Is much known as to the provinence of this set - Taylors but made for whom - nothing like it in IMM although the Fitzpatrick looks similar

There's been some debate about the origin of this set. Best to consult Sean Folsom (the owner) regarding it's history.

tuning tenor drone

Post by vanfleet »

On my Gallagher set, there is a small (1/2 inch) strip of leather wrapped once around the tenor drone and then glued to itself (imagine a tear-drop shape). This is a great low-impact way to add a handle to the drone slide and allow tuning. Its unobtrusive and removable.
Now I don't know if this came with the pipes, or if it was added by the previous owner; MyPipes, want to chime in? Could also have been a David Power idea, since he was giving lessons to said owner.

Good ideas on customization and "after-market modifications" should be shared around!

The "thingy" is actually a gearstick! most newer sets are usually automatic, but this is a fine example of the older manual version!(the clutch is located on the chanter)!
Listen to me young fellow, what need is there for fish to sing when i can roar and bellow?

....I kind of figured that was the "octave selector switch" that we'd heard about on the Pakistani set being hawked by that crazy old bird on e-bay
