Help! reccomendations for new Free anti-virus software?

I've been using the free AVG antivirus as was suggested by a kind soul on here. It worked great. Now it's about to end and I need a new one.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should use as a replacement?

last time I used avast it had a lot of false positives in it's virus search, which meant it wrongly removed a couple of system files.

I gave up paying for Norton and now use (for over a year now) AVAST and Zonealarm Firewall.

Both of these are completely free to use and I have not had any problems for over a year.

These days, the difference between viruses and spywares is slim. I would also suggest you download spybot, it's really efficient at killing spywares.

I was quite confused by AVG, too, but also found the new free program and it works, as far as I can tell, just like the prior free one. I've never had a problem while running AVG which I've been doing for...is it 5-6 years now?

I also agree with Azalin about the importance of spyware removal programs. I use both spybot and adaware...I'm not convinced either catches everything, but using both seems to work well for me.

It's $50 a year but you can use it for three computers, which would save me a lot of money compared with Norton, as there are in fact 3 Windows computers in my home. Last time I checked it was available only to subscribers in the US but hopefully it'll be available in Canada soon if it isn't already.

Of course it's ironic that Microsoft sells software and services to address vulnerabilities in its own operating system, but there you go.

Yes, and AVG also has a free anti-spyware tool at the link I posted.
I haven't tried it yet, but I will be doing so shortly.

FWIW, i'm caretaker of several PC's at a couple of locations, and AVG is a good product - free only (if you abide by their agreement as i recall) if you use it at home. but spybot and adaware are good, free programs that do a good job at what they do and they are on every PC i care for.
