solstice

Well... it's about the winter solstice. The day when the winter begins, unless you are in the southern hemisphere of the earth, in which case the seasons are opposite.

Happy Chanukah.

So, the surf goes out to sea south of the equator? Why didn't I know that?

http://tinwhistletunes.com/clipssnip/newspage.htm Officially, the government uses the term “flap,” describing it as “a condition, a situation or a state of being, of a group of persons, characterized by an advanced degree of confusion that has not quite reached panic proportions.”

The solstice was at 0.22 am this morning. I drove with a friend down to Avebury, through seventy miles of freezing fog, to be there at dawn.

And what a dawn it was. The mists slowly cleared, the great stones looming out of the cloud, as the birds called and flew across the sky. The sun was a pale ball of silver.

Terry the Druid, who conducted the ritual, said that although were were at the farthest point from the sun, and were now returning, the actual return, "The Sun's Rebirth" as he put it, happens sometime within the five days of Yule. And this year, he said, the Rebirth would be on Boxing day.

A beautiful dawn and a beautiful day.

Except in England, where all the airports have been closed due to a fleezing frog.

Actually, in most places other than the U.S., the solstice marks the midpoint of winter (which is why it's also called "midwinter"). Why the U.S. chose to make it the first official day of winter is anyone's guess, as it makes no sense whatsoever...winter has been here for more than a month already.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

It's so we'll think winter's shorter than it really is. A misdirection, but arguably a mercy for some of us.

I think if I went by what "seems like" winter (and I do), I'd basically say, it's the entire months of December, January, and February. The solstice wouldn't really be the midpoint. It usually doesn't get "really cold" until January or February.
