I'm hiding my post text so as not to spoil the explanation for anyone who doesn't want it spoiled before they give it a go

All the information you need really is given in Tal's post. (yes, I know "tal" is not for all)
Notes: A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G# A
D Major: D E F# G A B C# D
Starting at D, we have 2 jumps to E (skipping D#), 2 jumps to F# (Skipping F), 1 jump to G, 2 jumps to A, etc.
This gives us a pattern of 2212221
If we do the same jumps starting with F, we get
F G A Bb C D E F
We call it Bb instead of A#, because of the convention of only naming each note once, so we don't have F G A A# C D E F.

I picked up my knowledge of scales, and modes and stuff trying to learn about modes on my own via internet research. I just wanted to learn the difference between Aeolian, Ionion, Mixolydian, etc.
Like the trigonometry I learned in school, I've found the knowledge to be entirely academic and not necessary in "real life" (playing tunes on the whistle)
