I got my copy of this a few hours ago. been nipping in and out of a few tracks here and there..present company are not exactly what you would call Tom Waits fans.
On the little bit of evidence I have so far...it is truly great.
Amazing is not the word.
Just listened to "King Kong" on the third CD...Jeez how good can it get?
Beyond words..beyond explanation..utter class and beyond.
Album of the Decade..never mind the year.

On the drive up the East Coast for Thanksgiving, we had NPR tuned in with the interview in which Waits was discussing this album. But we were in the hills, and it kept fading in and out, so I had no idea it was a 3-record set. I just added it to my wish list; hopefully Santa will be bringing it.

Gang of Four's Return The Gift
This is probably one of the most original ideas for an unoriginal album ever. Essentially, it's a tribute album recorded by the actual musicians...
Gang of Four were four guys from Leeds who read Gramsci and listened to Parliament-Funkadelic. They created some of the most bluntly honest rock music I've ever heard. A couple of years ago, they got on the post-punk band reunion wagon and released this--a cherry-picked collection of some of their best stuff. Very cagey move: if they had just put out a box set, EMI and Warner Bros. would've taken the lion's share of the profits. By doing it this way, they reclaimed ownership of their own material and got a whole lot of media attention to boot. Essentially, they said to their fans what no bunch of old geezer rockers ever have the guts to say to their fans: "Look, you don't really care about us or our lives or our current interests; you just want to hear the old songs again, so here you go."
I feel cheated and yet almost satisfied. Apparently, new material is in the works, though...I'd be curious to hear it.
Yes, the dollar bill is real.

I've been listening to a Lot of Elvis Costello in the past few months again, along with Devo (not quite on the same level, but still...always loved them) and some Ramones for early morning bus ride music.
They Might Be Giants (Flood) is definately the top of my list at the moment (it's 16 years old now...time flies) and I listen to it every day while working.
Dar Williams manages to be playing everytime I'm in the car for the last week or so (wife controls the car music), but I can't say I'm complaining.
One of the biggest things I've been listening to lately is the three CDs from the Wooden Flute Obsession set (ok, actually 6 I guess). It's the perfect thing at times when I'm wanting to shut out all the background and need to do some serious coding.

Currently listening to about a dozen of "The Cat Who..." books on tape... I can work while listening. If I try to work while listening to music, I get these terrible urges to pick up a whistle, and then all is lost.

Oh, wow. I've got one for you guys.
I just picked up a box set that includes 5 Christmas EPs from Sufjan Stevens. He's apparently been making them for his friends, family and acquaintances since 2001. I'd purposefully avoided Sufjan Stevens for selfish reasons, but upon hearing this song I knew I needed to go buy it. Lovely.
UPDATE: Here's a video of another of his Christmas songs.
