Top end Crans?

Post by HampshireWhistler »

Hello All,
Does anyone have any advice on how to pull off a cran or something like one on the top end of the whistle, say a cran on A or B? Is there a standard form for it? I have this thing I do on the top end sometimes that sounds like a cran but I'm not sure.
:-?

Tell us something.: You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

I used to have a thing like that which I did up there too. I thought it sounded cool, but my flute teacher put an end to it pronto:

Her: "Loren, whatever that thing is that you're doing there, on the A, B and C# notes, near the beginning of the tune........ we're not going to do that any more."

Me: "What you don't like my two fingered cran up high?"

Her: "No, I don't like your two fingered cran."

And that was that!

My advice, whatever it is you're doing, unless you're Matt Molloy, or Seamus Egan, for the love of all things trad, stop doing it!

Jack Coen does something similar, actually, it was discussed a month or two ago on the flute forum. I don't think he plays "normal" rolls much.

It's OK to have your own way of playing... If you're Jack Coen :)

Simple way to put this is that there are no fast rules. A series of cuts (for crans or to get crans) will do. Don't limit yourself. Infact, create your own. Some of the best musicians are doing there own thing regardless of Tradition :) . Although trad is great to learn in the beginning it isn't that critical (TIMING IS)!! It's the starting point for most. However, discover your own potential w/time. I'm going to get hammered for saying that!! But, it's ok :D .

P.S. Best wishes and don't give up on yourself. Upper crans are some of the most difficult to grasp.

If you discover you have a "perfect" Low Whistle, don't sell it. Trust me, I know! If it's close to perfection, don't sell it. Trust me, I know! If you feel that it's difficult to adjust to but you still feel a deep connection to it, don't sell it. Just give it to me!!!

On A and B I pretty much just stick with normal rolls. On B I actively avoid short rolls, in fact.

On the other notes I will sometimes do a double-cut roll but I wouldn't be able to pull this off on A or B.

Okay Peter, you're going to have to help me out with that one, because googling the term only gets me foreign language results :P Help a poor, non-Gaelic speaking brother out, would ya?

Crann Pailme = palm tree. Very common in Ireland, especially in Leitrim.

I admit, I did exactly what Loren did with the same result. Are those trees homegrown or imported from Miami?
