Colours of Delrin/ synthetics and Flutes

Post by demon_piper »

So I have seen that M&E can make an orange polymer whistle. Basically I want an orange keyless Seery. Yes, its insane, but its the kinda thing I'd keep forever.

So does anyone know if Mr. Seery could do it?

Thanks

No doubt but that he could make one...to increase the chances of him actually doing so, I would get the material myself and send it to him rather than having him spend a lot of time chasing down a single piece.... :o

It would definitely make an impression.

Why orange? In an Irish flute flute it is certainly an interesting preference.

Doing it backwards since 2005.

Tell us something.: I restore 19th century flutes, specializing in Rudall & Rose, and early American flutes. I occasionally make new flutes. Been at it for about 15 years.

I think he uses ABS for his flutes, either that or it is PVC rod.

Isn't the flute a symbol of Ulster the way the Harp is a symbol of
the Republic? But, yeah, I wouldn't play it in Dublin or anything...

I thought Seery flutes were conical, like the M&E?
(Edit: Just looked, he says on his website that they're Delrin)

Michael Cronnolly is the one who uses solid food grade PVC rods...not to be confused with the cylindrical stuff - his are conical bored. I've noticed that my M&E actually swells a bit when being played directly in the sun on a 105 degree day (you notice it when pulling apart the joints). In contrast, my Seery didn't.

Isn't something around 140 the danger zone for PVC? Over 200 for Delrin?

If I can get one in Leslie hunting, that would be grand.

From the polymers I've dealt with (though none of them for flute construction) the color is just a matter of adding the right dye. You would have to contact a manufacturer to find out what it would take to get material with an odd color made. Material in a special color might be prohibitively expensive by itself, before any flute-making goes on.

Easiest thing would be to have the builder put you in touch with his supplier.

Definitely don't play it in the Republic!

The last verse of "The ould orange flute":

At a council of priests that was held the next day
They decided to banish the ould flute away
They couldn't knock heresy out of its head
So they bought Bob a new one to play in its stead
Now the ould flute it was doomed and its fate was pathetic
'Twas fastened and burnt at the stake as heretic
As the flames roared around it, sure they heard a strange noise
'Twas the ould flute still playing 'The protestant boys'

I know delrin comes in White, black and "natural" which is kind of a beige. Me an Jack Bradshaw were kicking around the idea (or I was kicking him with the idea ) of molding them with that imitation Ivory stuff for Ivory Monzani replicas...
