I'm sentenced to bed rest, which is painful, but I'm writing this note, as I got up to send an email to the professors, about my condition, as I have two exams and an essay Monday, and may be unable to attend classes.
The good news is that it's not gotten into my blood stream. If it does, there's little choice but hospitalization.

Walden, I was very sorry to hear that you are sick...I hope it heals up quickly and cleanly and with a minimum of disruption to your life.
Be careful and keep an eye on it.

Prayers for healing for you have been sent. Do keep us informed and be sure to follow dr's orders. I know it's hard to be laid up and tempting to break the rules.

I've got two tests and an essay due, Monday. The doctor says I won't know till Monday whether I can go to classes.
I've had no luck getting in touch with the teachers. One claims to have a policy of no makeup exams after 48 hours, regardless of circumstance, and even then, it loses points.
I can surely have my sister take her the essay, but I don't know what to do about the exams.

Warm wishes for a fast recovery headed your way. Be sure to take all the meds they gave you for the full length of time proscribed--If you stop once you start feeling better, you will actually make things worse! (You will have only killed off the least resistant pathogens, leaving the more resistant ones to reproduce, thus refining the strain and making it even MORE resistant to the meds. That's actually how the resistant strains get started, tho' few people realize it.)
As for your instructors, let them know what's going on. Many will say no make-ups (thus preventing students from delaying til they can hear from someone else what was on the test), but will usually make exceptions for a student who really does have a serious problem. (I'm currently in Nursing school, going for my RN degree.) Make sure they understand that this is the antibiotic resistan strain AND is communicable, and I'll bet they will cut you some slack.

I'm thinking of you Walden!
In the grand scheme of things, you're health is far more important than a test, or a class, or a semester, so rest, don't fret the class stuff, and if you have a guidance counselor, contact them about your situation. Otherwise try the dean.

I'm so sorry to hear this, Aaron. My thoughts are with you.
You shouldn't have to get in touch with your teachers while you are in this condition. Reasonable teachers don't have policies this rigid. Not all teachers are reasonable, but most schools have appeal procedures for bad cases. I can understand someone eventually forcing a student's hand because, at some point, catch up does become impossible. But, surely in the case of genuine excuses and short term absence, your college will have some procedure to let you catch up. I've never taught at a place as harsh as you are describing.Walden wrote:I've got two tests and an essay due, Monday. The doctor says I won't know till Monday whether I can go to classes.

Have a note from your doctor and also his/her phone number
for the prof to call. If that fails to persuade, go to the department chair,
then the dean. But don't sweat this--just do this minimum then
forget about it. Faculty at american universities are deluged
with scam excuses for missing exams, which results in
such policies--once it's plain that's
not the case with you, the prof will almost certainly relent, if not the
university will make him/her do so.
This is the second time that you've had this condition, as I recall,
so if there is some underlying circumstance that is leading
you to get sick or makes you vulnerable, please please please address it
with all your intelligence and will after the smoke clears.
