We were and still are Mike. And right, he's definitely up there. That would be John Joe Kelly you're talking about on bodhran. What a mighty band Mallin Head must have been. Any recorded evidence folks? For those who don't know Flook, the whistle players are Brian Finnegan and Sarah Allen. Brian seems to have more of a reputation as a virtuoso but the empathetic interplay between all four members is what really makes this band for me.On 2002-09-27 15:08, mike.r wrote:
We were talking about Dermot Hyde on the pipeline thread and he,s up there with the best in my opinion.Wombat, you mentioned the band Flook and I,m pretty certain Dermot and Tom have played together with Flook bodhran player(dont know his name) in Mallin Head. Mike

Favourite Player?
Mike McGoldrick, have you checked out Kerry Whistles site to see him play the "Songbird" whistle?
Joe McKenna
Cillian Vallely
and for something different, ie not ITrad Phil Brown
I've just realised that the first three are'nt whistler's first. Their main instrument is Flute, Pipes and Pipes respectivley.
Cheers, Mac

Hey Coloman, I am with you! Loretto Reid!
And, the best part is I am taking lessons with her. She is a dear and such fun!...a 'one hour' lesson lasts the best part of the afternoon, 'cause you have to have tea with her and chat.
I just got her 'Celtic Mettle' Cd and it is fabulous.
My other favourite: Eamon Dillon.

Loretto Reid!!!! But I wish she'd put out a CD that's nothing but whistle/flute.........
Martin Nolan, just got his new CD...... and I have to agree with whoever it was that said Chieftains 8.....I bought it a long time ago and it always resurfaces when I want a good tape for car trips............................

Me too Janice. I also have couple of her Solitudes Cds...a fair amount of whistle, BUT...being Solitudes, they are filled with the damn chirping birds....
I was not aware that she was such an accomplished composer. I listed to 'Fleur de Quebec' and 'The Canuck Set' on 'Celtic Mettle', and wondered who had written them..went and looked and sure enough it was Loretto. I have a lesson today...I shall tell her we want a whistle/flute Cd with no birds!!

Favorite whistle player would be L.E. McCullough, favorite album is "St. Patrick Was a Cajun."
You just gotta love a guy who composes and plays tunes called "Goat Gods and Bean Dip," and "Leroy the Barbarian."
Seriously, though, he has this little trick of bending notes with the medody line that gives his playing a very bright, happy feeling, even while he's blowing you away with ornaments the mere mortal can't replicate.
Best,
