Yeah, cool! They have sound samples of the banjo and mandolin. As well as a tin 3/4 scale guitar with a sound sample.

These are very cool indeed. Any idea how I could make one? Not to take a sale from an enterprising and creative craftsman, but I simply can't afford to spend more $$ on an instrument right now.

Have a read of Deb Suran's excellent write up here:

http://www.mimf.com/archives/cookietin_banjo.htm

I've modified quite a few aspects of the design to suit the way I build them myself, but this is the starting point.

You can buy fretwire, tuners and mandolin fretboards pre-slotted from places like Luthiers Mercantile International. Besides that, ordinary wood working tools and a pillar drill are essential.

Have fun!

Thanks for the link. I'd actually found that one but couldn't figure out how to get a mandolin neck with a bottom end long enough to go through the tin. Buying a fretboard and just making the neck makes a lot of sense.

Looks like the prices are comparable to yours, Rob -- £65 GBP = $123 USD, on the website above the lunchboxes start at $99 USD (£52). Elderly's marking them up a bit but they're still not far off, given the exchange rate.

Fair comment; I'm just so used to seeing prices listed as Xnumber of US$ then finding the same item on sale here for an equal amount of £'s.

You're right of course - the same logic doesn't apply in reverse when converting from £s back to $s!

Isn't Elderly marketing them as a novelty item?
Might that mean they don't take the models they're selling of this item as serious?

On the other hand, I was reading the ingredients on a tin box of dark chocolate covered candied ginger the other day and my husband asked me if I was weighing the dangers of eating a "no no" food with the enjoyment of making my own new fiddle.
