Not nearly enough.

As made more than obvious at band practice this evening.

i normally start off thinking i'm only going to play one or two songs, but then the sound of the whistle makes me play more, and more, to the point where i've played almost all the songs i know really well at present. Then i start trying to learn something new because the old songs are getting boring. So i wind up playing about an hour when i really only had ten minutes to spare. I LOVE my whistle :).

how much practise

Post by arnie »

I'm a beginner, that is, I started playing seriously last august. Before I played, especially folkballads, and just the plain notes. Now I've got a teacher who really tells me what and what not to do. I want to do it right and therefore I practise at least half an hour a day, if possible up to one hour. I take this time explicitely, however it's difficult sometimes with a family with 3 children and a fulltime job going on. I play in a folkband and slowly but surely we tend to put in a jig or reel now. I'm in love with the whistle and if there's nobody home I tend to pick it up inbetween and practise.

I get a chance to practise with my son nowadays. It's very satisfying. Now that I have my new set of pipes, I'm at it quite a bit - as much as I can and still get some work done! Having said that, I answered "a little every day", and as Liam becomes better, so will I.

Cheers,
PR

About 1 1/2 hours a day would be normal but some of that time is spent playing tunes in front of the TV.

practising too much!

Post by falkbeer »

I remember when I was very young. My goal was to be a professional classical guitarist. Me and my guitar were inseparable at that time. The competition to be accepted at the conservatoire (academy of music) was very stiff at that time, so I used to practice 5-6 hours every day!

Some time after I had been accepted at the academy I developed tendenitis (inflammation in the tendon, much like a tennis elbow) my elbow and had to give up playing at all for a couple of years. I was not a happy camper at that point in my life!

Perhaps to much practicing isn´t good at all!

I play tunes a lot, I practice little.

I should do the opposite.

Not enough but I've been learning something new every week while continuing with what I know. The band helps make that happen.

Sadly, this can be true, and I've recently had a similar experience: I really dedicated myself to Trad Flute practice in the spring of this year, finally going for lessons and practicing 2 hours a day, every day. The good news was, my playing improved dramatically. The bad news however, was that I developed wicked tendonitis after several months of this, and eventally had to stop playing the flute entirely for a number of months.

In the long run, I'd have made better progress by practicing less, in order to avoid the tendonitis, but then I had no way of knowing at the time.

I learned this same lesson during my 10-year fiddling fling.

Oh I had a very specific practice plan for my two hours a day, and I stuck with it, unfortunately my left wrist couldn't handle it.

Good advice though.
