Must see/do in Dublin?

Post by MarcusR »

I'm off to Dublin to pick up my new set of pipes and cheering for my (semi ex-)wife in the marathon. We'll be spending a few days in the City before we go back to Sweden. Anything we better not miss out on?

Best pub, best restaurant, best music shop ... ???

Any and all input appreciated :D

This weekend,

p.s. - best restaurant? If it's great food you're after, you've come to the wrong place... :-)

p.p.s - seriously, the best restaurant is across the street from my house

If you're interested in history, I recoommend Dublinia

http://www.dublinia.ie/

The National Museum at Collins Barracks is worth a few hours

http://www.easytobook.com/en/dublin-hot ... ks-dublin/

If you're interested in drinking Guiness, the brewery does a tour

http://www.guinness-storehouse.com/

If the city is getting too much, a trip out to Howth on the DART will blow away the cobwebs

http://www.dublintourist.com/towns/howth/

This last link has a lot of other tourist spots too, depends on what you like.

The city centre is small, so not a big problem just wandering from pub to pub or resturant to resturant to find one you like of an evening. Temple Bar is the "Tourist" spot at night, also popular with students from Trinity College. Depends on whether you like the crowds and noise.

I think the tour buses that you can jump on and off as often as you like provide good value for touring on a day ticket, and save the feet.
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that schwing

I'd play "Cockles and Mussels" and probably get rotten eggs thrown at me by the locals.

Notice anything odd here?

Marcus,

The tips in this thread and the one that Bloomie linked to should be enough to keep you going.

Some of the finest entertainment in Dublin can be found by just keping your ears open and listening to the natives go about their daily banter.

here's a sample of everyday Dublin banter (Hill 16 is the section of Croke Park where the Dubs gather to support our Gaelic football team)

"Overheard on Hill 16.

Dublin were all over Roscommon but were failing to hit the target and were running up a high amount of wides. After the tenth or so such wide some well-mannered educated chap (clearly out of place on Hill 16 ) pipes up and says:

"Come on Dublin, let's convert our superiority into scores"

A reply came from a cider drinking yobbo - "Do yiz hear f**king Shakespeare down der"

Lots more here.

Be very careful with your wallet as pickpockets abound.

If you get a chance, try to get to Dublins best kept secret, Kavanaghs
It has not changed one bit since opening in 1833. Bit off the beaten track but not that hard to find.

Slan,
D.

Thanks all for the input, I think I now have enough to last me a month or two :D

I'll posts some new pics and eventually some sound clips on the piping forum when I get back. The pipe maker is our own Bill Haneman (billh on the forums).
From what I have seen and heard so far, I'm overwhelmed. Just can't wait to get my hands on them. The only downside I can think of is that I have run out of excuses, now I have to learn to play them darn things

Here you go for now:

Soundclip (Green fields of Canada, played by billh)

Cheers!

There will be a Robbie Hughes practice set up for sale soon

Looks like your woman has availed herself of some silicone implants. Either that or some fine uplifting product from Victoria's Secret. Don't know if that is considered odd, but I have to admit it is (or maybe I should say they are) what I noticed...

I'm sure I'll agree with you :D :D :D :D :D

Bill has been a pleasure to deal with and I know there are a few more here on C&F that have ordered pipes from Bill that will be ready quite soon.

Take care Peter!
