Probably only fans of The Band and Dylan will...

Post by JS »

Probably only fans of The Band and Dylan will have any idea why I did this, but on my way downstate to Woodstock NY for a poetry reading, I swung through West Saugerties to see if I could find Big Pink, the house where they rehearsed and recorded. So here, poorly photographed, and up a gratifyingly small hillside road, it is:

Woodstock took place at Max Yasgur's place... technically, that would be 'farm out' man...

A shrine.

The Basement Tapes were recorded there...

I would have to at least touch the house if I were there.

I have this sudden desire to release a project and call it The Debasement Tapes.
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

I wonder who lives there now and what they make of it all.

I wouldn't be surprised if they get periodic requests from passers by to be shown the basement.

Very nice. A good candidate for the National Historic register.

Cool! Just this morning there was a picture of a local 50s/60s rock and roll band in the newspaper with Garth Hudson holding a tenor sax. Well.. they said it was Hudson. You certainly couldn't tell by looking.

IIRC Hudson did the sax on Tears of Rage. Actually, there's a whole Garth Hudson web site with biography etc.

If I'm not mistaken, that's asbestos siding--I don't think it's made to be painted.
