Medieval Music

I have recently been trying out some medieval tunes rather than traditional Irish. There's one particular tune I don't seem to be able to locate- Merry Milkmaids We, Can anyone help? I have a program called noteworthy which can convert midis into sheet music, so I am after sheet or midi.

Medieval is going back a bit.

This is about as far back as I go.

(Well, there's "The Witches" which is 1520 they tell me...)

There's a second volume too. Although it's for mandolin, that's right in the range of a D whistle and works quite nicely.

Perhaps you're looking in the wrong places: that song is from the Rennaissance.

But you're right; I can find lots of recordings, but no midis or sheetmusic.

A number of medieval tunes are playable on whistle in transpostion. The music of the time was fairly diatonic, and the medieval version of the recorder was much closer to the whistle than it's baroque cousin.

You can try some recorder books of period specific tunes. There are tons of early music sites online, give them a shot first !!

Thanks for that. I have the song on a CD that claims to be medieval, but has little detail in the sleeve. Anything else you can tell me about that tune/era?

If it's Playford, it's not even Renaissance, it's the 17th century, which would have to be baroque.

Certainly English Renaissance style, regardless of the year. Decent arrangements, and nicely notated (even in NWC, so you can change the key!)
