And with that ballad ye brought a smile to my face and tears to my eyes

A smile to my face and tears to my eyes
A smile to my face and tears to my eyes
A smile to my face and tears to my eyes

...Absolutely brilliant Walden!

Walden:

You da Man!!!

Can you email me the ABC for that? Surely its sung to a tune?!? I thought at first it would go with the Ballad of Gilligan, but I dont think that works. Maybe to Bonnie Wood Green?

Bill, actually ARPANET was in the news a couple years back during the presidential campaigning. If I'm not mistaken, Al Gore took credit for developing ARPANET.

Any CMD tune will work.

To use Gilligan's Island, just knock off the last three lines of each stanza, which are repeats.

Adjust the repeats to fit any Common Meter tune you like.

Okay, Walden, where's the score - or at least the ABC?

PS: Sorry 'bout that - I didn't realize there was a second page to the thread until after posting.

This whole thing cracks me up. If anyone here besides myself and StevieJ ever met Azalin they'd scratch their head in wonderment at how differently from the truth people here are imagining him to be.

I was lucky enough to spend a good chunk of my summer in Ireland with him a year ago. I first met Azalin in Custy's Music Shop in Ennis. Azalin was spending three months riding around Ireland on his bike, and I swear, at least half the weight was from his whistles. So, as I was saying, I was in Custy's sorting through piles and piles of Generations when in comes this cheery, smiling, extremely enthusiastic, very kind, very humurous, very good-natured fellow with a thick French-Canadian accent who also wants to try out the whistles. As we were sorting through the bin we got to talking. We introduced ourselves and made the connection between our real-life selves and our on-line personas. Over the course of the summer we spent lots of time together, shared lots of tunes and even more laughter.

Here's how I would describe Azalin. Azalin is one of the nicest, most good natured guys I've ever met. He's a little bit shorter than me (I'm 5'10"), a little bit older than me (I'm nearly 24 - he might be 26 or 27), rather muscular, has very short cut black hair and a big smile. He is exceptionally friendly, sometimes overly enthusiastic, very-very polite, kind, generous, willing to teach others and very eager to learn. He is very serious about Irish music and loves it almost to the point of bursting.

When I met him he had very thick accent and his phrasing in English was often a little bit creative - usually ending up in humorous linguistic inventions. Over the summer his English improved tremendously, though my French remained non-existant. For those of you wondering why his sentences are often a little odd - that's the reason - English is not his first language. Sometimes I, and others, would get a little confused by things he said, and there were even times that we were almost offended, but it was clear from his tone of voice, big smile, and kindly nature that he didn't mean it with anything but kindness, sincerity and interest.

One other thing - Azalin is a VERY good whistle player. I consider myself to be a decent whistle player, and I was a bit more advanced than him when we met, but he had only been playing for 1 year and I had been playing for 4. I've never seen anyone make as much progress in such a short time. But that's besides the point.

When I read Steve Power's reaction to Azalin's post I could not help but laugh aloud. Azalin is one of the kindest, well intentioned guys I know. Not only that, but I could never imagine him physically assaulting anyone in any way. He's much more likely to tell them a bad French-Canadian joke that is even worse in translation, and then laugh uproarously at it himself while everyone else scratches their heads in confusion.

So, the point of my whole, winding, rambling post is that Az is a darn nice guy and a darn good whistle player. He could have phrased his original question a little more gently, but a lot of that is the result of the language barrier. It's hard to be subtle in a language other than your own. The truth is, he was just honestly confused about why the ShannaQuay prices were more than double the WhistleShop prices, and so he asked why they were that way. There's nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately, Steve thought that was a question that he should be allowed to ask and threatened him and Dale with legal action.

Now imagine if BestBuy was selling a TV for twice the price of Fry's and I asked on a public forum why the price was double. Can you imagine if BestBuy was monitoring those boards and consequently threatened to sue me and then threatened to have me arrested if I ever stepped in their store? How rediculous would that be? We'd all think that BestBuy's management had lost their mind and I'd either laugh them off or launch a countersuit alleging unlawful discrimination and impingement on freedom of speech. Of course I wouldn't sue, because I think suing is incredibly lame in almost all situations, but I could sue, and my suit would have more ligitimacy then theirs. The whole thing, however, would be just rediculous. That's how I feel about Steve threatening to sue Dale and Azalin and have Azalin arrested.

Anyways, Azalin is a really nice guy and those of you making him out to be a real jerk are mistaken.

Best,
Chris

Woa!!! Chris, so you do really have a crush on me eh? You should have told me so a year ago, now it's too late, an irish woman stole my heart!

Seriously, thanks for the compliments, it's a bit of fresh air after the harrasement I have been under.

Your post makes me remember summer 2001. It's crazy how I'm sure we've all changed since then, and when I think of what I went through since... That was a heck of a summer, and we kept on meeting at different places, altough I was trying to avoid you at the end as my girlfriend loves guys with short hair, and you became instant competition

Really hope we can meet again at one point in Ireland or elsewhere, have a few pints and a few tunes.

WARNING...RAMBLES ON AND ON...

Chris, your tribute to Az was very moving and I'm sure it's all true. Something else interesting is that last year at that time when you guys were in Ireland, I was there too, and I met Steve. He, too, was warm and gentle, and very nice and generous. I know from experience (as do many of us) that it's easy to get totally fired up on the board and act differently or less sensitively than we might act in person. Also, when someone perceives attack, he or she is generally inclined to fight back. I know I have certainly gotten myself into a mess over that. It seems Steve has, too. If I can remember correctly, Az and I had a short not-so-nice exchange of posts once (I don't even remember what it was about), but then we did a whistle trade and it went very well and now, as far as I know, we're on fine terms. So that's good. And as for Steve walking off in a huff, well, I did that, too. And plenty of people aren't happy to see me back. But this time around I am trying to be helpful more than post about what pisses me off. Anyway, and man can I ramble, I think my point is that good people can get into arguments with each other. I liked what you said about Az, and I wanted to point out how different Steve was in person.

Jessie,
Thanks for you insight. Everything you say here is very true and very wise. I hope Steve Power eventually returns in good form and is welcomed back.

And for those of you have haven't met Jessie, she is every bit as kind and friendly as Az, and even better looking (sorry Az)!

Best,
Chris

P.S. - Sorry Az, I've already got a beautiful girlfriend, but if I'm ever in the mood for some hot Canadian loving you're my man.

Actually, from his many posts that I've read since finding C&F many months ago, that was my impression of him all along. It's good of you to confirm it, though.

Jessie,

I think our last "fight" was actually about Steve, you stepped up to defend him and we ended up in a childish ramble! Yeah, our trade went well, and I guess we cooled down. Don't also forget that I once said you were as gergeous as a goddess... Hehe.

Chris, you're really pissing me off, Jessie and your girlfriend more beautiful than me!! Ok, here's my picture, I'm this blond haired musician to the left, I'm not sure about this stupid goof laughing to the right...
