Swedish flute music

Post by MarkusT »

30 of September there will be a class focusing on the wooden flute tradition in south of Sweden. It will be held in Helsingborg at “Dunkers kulturhus”, easy to find if you are around. You are very welcome even if you are playing the boehm-system.
Email/PM me if you are interested.

Ryanair flyes to Malmö for a few EUR, just half an hour train ride to Helsingborg :)

If you are interested in this kind of stuff, Henrik Norbeck has an online essay on "Wooden flutes in traditional Swedish music"

Thanks for the link.

I am very interested in Swedish tunes - so many lovely and interesting ones. Jimmy Johanssen and Tuva Modeer came to the Gow Festival in Dunkeld last March, and taught and performed for a week, which was just great.

Unfortunately, work stops me from coming to Sweden now... but I'm always interested.

thanks,

Pamela

Tell us something.: Just updating my profile after 16+ years of C&F membership. Sold most of my flutes, play the ones I still own and occasionally still enjoy coming here and read about flute related subjects.

Very cool Markus! (and thanks for the email too :-))

In the workshop, will you be focusing on flute technique or on playing/learning the Swedish tunes?

Cheers,
Jeroen

PS: I always thought your avatar was a picture of some kind of wood (North American Indian) sculpture.
Just realised it isn't

Hi!

Jeroen: I will focus on playing/learning tunes associated with fluteplayers from the past. Depending on the group of people I will talk about technique and different kind of tunes/dances etc. The area of interest is the south of Sweden and mainly Skåne, where the flute tradition is strong.

Pamela: Since I am the teacher I can already give you a rewiev... no, but I can of course send you some tunes if you want.

So what style differences are their between Swedish music and that of the Irish?

My wife is from Sweden (Gothenburg, Bohuslan). I've checked on Henrik Norbeck's website before and he only seems to cover southern Sweden. Currently I'm attempting misc. fiddle tunes from sheet music. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! :)

Hi Markus!

I wont be able to make it to the Swedish flute music class, even though I only live a three hour drive away. As others here also expressed an interest but wont amake it to Helsingborg I got this bright idea.
As you are the teacher, why dont you put up some tunes, instructions and comments online? Like an introduction to Swedish flute music online class.
It would for sure be something I would be willing to pay for, and I'm sure there are more than me.

Lycka till!

Great idea - and it's so much better to hear tunes than see the music.

Hi!

Of course I will share the music! I am experiencing slight technical problems but here are a couple of tunes for the moment. I will be able to put up more tracks later. The tracks are taken from a recording that I and a fellow flute player, Andreas Ralsgård, did. The playing is very traditional with typical Swedish harmonising. The real flute nerd (as we all are) might want to know that there's one Grinter and one Hammy flute on the recording.

The first tune is a “slängpolska” a very common type of tune/dance, dominant in the southern parts of Sweden.

Here are two waltzes is a set. Both of them are associated with flute player Jocan Jacob Bruun (1818-1889) from Skåne, the southernmost part of Sweden.

Plaese let me know what you think of it. If you find it strange or hard to listen to.

Wow! I adore the waltzes especially the first - will definitely start learning them! And such nice harmonies. Could you tell us the names, please?

And, the slangpolska is lovely -

Thank you Markus. The workshops will be wonderful - I envy the players who join you.
