monotone singers

Post by Jack »

I know you can't really sing with only one note, but...

Today I was listening to Tracy Chapman and it occured to me that she uses very very little actual range (from low to high) in her music, but I really like her music. Another person I thought of immediately who doesn't really have or use any great singing range was Grace Jones.

I deliberately leave out people who can't sing, like Britney Spears. Grace Jones and Tracy Chapman can sing, they just don't use that much range in their music.

Who are others?

And just because Grace Jones is so interesting to look at:

I don't know any with limited range. I have heard that Elton John and Stevie Wonder songs often have an extreme range low to high. So only singers with similar talent should attempt them.

I can think of a few Bruce Springsteen songs sung in monotone.
Can't say as I actually like them, but some folks seem to.

I've heard a few Neil Young songs that used a single note, though that note would sorta waver wildly all over the place... :o

Leonard Cohen

I remember seeing Natalie Merchant on Carson once, right after she left 10000 maniacs. She sang a song that didn't have a range of more than three notes. It was nearly unbearable.

Sort of like that awful Neil Young song, "Horse With No Name".

That song was by "America", not Mr. Young.
