Bloomfield wrote:Excellent. Keep them coming, all. Poems recently posted in other threads (like "time") are welcome to play, but you'll have to post them in this thread.
I missed this missive yesterday, or I would have posted my
poem from the C&F Tenth Anniversary thread
Although it has no chance of winning now (not like it did
anyway...), I'll still foist it upon you all.
  • Yes, ten is an excellent number...
    The base of our decimal system.
    But never has it found a better use,
    Than in our celebration of Chiffdom!

    Better than MySpace, better than Cupid
    For finding new friends and relations?
    Well, definately better for finding discussions
    about tweaks for new Generations!

    Feadogs, Susatos, Copelands, and Burkes,
    All whistles are welcomed here!
    (Even candy-coated slide-whistles,
    Which you can find by clicking here)

    Heck, even stringified instrument players
    May, if they wish, start a few threads!
    And o'er in the pub, you're sure to find polls
    Asking, "What is your favorite bread?"

    Yes, Chiff & Fipple's a wonderful place,
    Whether you come to post or to lurk.
    I'll happily shout "Ten more glorious years!"
    (But, for now, I must get back to work!)

You came startling my dream last night.
You smiled, and with your shadowed word broke
The years I spent sweeping that corner of myself-
-Of you, of me, of us, of possible,
Sweeping and sweeping, dusting and wiping
The tiniest nooks I could find of you.
(And that little corner grew nice and clean,
So I didn't even have to look anymore.)
I did not know it had somehow become a shrine:
Still your place, but too holy to approach,
Too shuddering to look upon in its bare quiet;
And so I learned to forget it was there,
Because such things could not be, at all.
I made it so, and it was better so.
But you came startling my dream last night,
The kindest laughter and a smile in your eyes;
And you danced carefullest me into your hands,
Your touch like a redemption and a lightning-bolt,
A final comfort, and a theft.
I am awake, now,
And wonder if you dreamt of me in turn.

(Oops. Competition's done, then? Oh, well. I think I'm done with the fine tuning, too. :) )

Well, since it's all water under the bridge at this point, might as well do another (with thanks and loudest plaudits to JES):

My flowers are petulant
My shoes have thin souls
My wallet is pocked
My hide burrowed with moles
But for all this, I'm happy
So happy indeed
For my narrow-bore chanter
Has a fabulous reed.

The cigarette
~~~~~~~~
Take me out
When you want
When you need
You caused the spark
That started the flame
That left me burning,
only for you
Take me
Press me against your lips
Consume me
And when you are done with me
Discard me, step on me
Ready to take another.
Tsk tsk. What a bad example you are setting for the young people. Smoking can lead to lung fever, halitosis, malignant mouth cankers, heart problems and all kinds of junk.
Well now the banner says "Are You Normal? Take the Quiz!" Good idea.
It would have been sufficient to state that you didn't consider it an entry. That would have left the poem for the readers' enjoyment.
I just waited until the contest was over.
Here is another one…
I’m a poet and didn’t even think it!
I make a rhyme any day!
Waited? It seems I had no choice, myself. The Muse comes to give me a kiss when it suits her fancy. My dreams are no more constant, either.
I dug that poem up from the days when I use to read my work at poetry readings in smoke filled coffee houses in condemned buildings.
*sigh* I was never so hip.
You should make this a poll. We don't have nearly enough polls.
And you could call it the Nunc pro Tunc Poll.
In second thought, maybe you'd better not call it that because then it would be finished before anyone had a chance to vote.
