non-cats and non-dog pets

Post by Jack »

We've discussed dogs and cats much lately.

But I wonder, what kind of OTHER pets do you have?

I know that James has some adorable ferrets, and mamakash has a parrot of some sort (if I remember correctly).

Myself, living in dorm housing I'm not allowed to have small furry pets* but if I had pets they would be technically illegal and might include 2 female fancy rats. Fish tanks are legal though and I have a 10 gallon planted (live plants) tank brimming with Heterandria formosa, a small native North American livebearer.

Yall?

*This is in theory at least. The rule is not enforced too strictly, and if somebody has a hamster or something it's just overlooked. One girl even takes her rabbit walking around campus on a harness. It's so cute. Multiple people have bunnies and quite a few have lizards, snakes, or spiders of some sort. In fact, in our yearbook there is always a joke page about "ILLEGAL PETS" and it shows people smiling holding their animals to the camera, with a little black bar saying "censored" across the animal's eyes so people won't recognize it. :P

mrs. gonzo has parakeets, and my kids and I are embarking on a project to get some kind of Australian lizard that we hope eats parakeets.

I have kept fish, and the nice thing about fish is that they poop where they live.

Currently, we've just got 2 cats and a dog. Growing up, however, there was a variety of different critters we kept as pets: cats, dogs, fish (I was particularly fond of the little albino catfish), hermit crabs, a hamster, a white rat, a crow (couldn't fly; had a broken wing which healed crooked; died after a few weeks), a wild rabbit (wounded; released after it healed), several horses, a steer (dad made the mistake of letting us kids turn it into a pet; we wouldn't let him have it butchered), and a goat (which I thought was a wonderful creature because it butted my older brother; he got pecked by the chickens, too, heh heh).

I was thinking we could get one of those little donkeys and one of those little horses and maybe have little mules to pull a little cart.

As a kid, at different times I had a gecko, a parakeet and a hamster, and later raised a new-born Spanish goat until she was big enough to join the herd.
My brother had a raccoon for several years. It was cute, but got in to everything.

I currently have three-quarters of a cat, an entire parrot who's too smart for his own good, and a ten-gallon fish tank that sits beside the parrot's cage so he has pretty things to watch when I'm not around (not that I'm all that pretty, mind).

It's always tempting to get more animal people in the house, but it's hard enough to give just a couple of them the attention they need (or demand). They do make our lives richer, though, don't they?

When I was a teenager in Mindanao, my friends called my house "Walden's Zoo."

Aside from the dogs I'd had a monkey, hanging parrots, full-sized parrot, mynah bird, guinea pigs, rabbits, tropical fish, turtles, toads, salamander, red crawdad, parakeets, rice birds, sparrows, hermit crabs, hamster...

not now, but we've had ferrets, red earred sliders (turtles), eastern box turtles (which AREN'T, they are tortoises), tarantula, baby possum (mom got mushed and raised it until it could fend for itself), mallard duck (it's mom got mushed, too, and it imprinted on humans, so we had to take it to the zoo), numerous fish, a mud puppy (bait), and I forget what else......
