1) Learn the D major scale (2 octaves) [done]
2) Learn the G major scale (only one octave) [done]
3) Learn Donnybrook fair [more or less done. Could sound better, and hand spasms when I try to tap, resulting in what sounds more like a trill. I also forget to breathe, so I end up with awkward breaths in the middle of a phrase.]
4) Now learn whatever pieces I want. Currently I'm working on The Kesh Jig.
For the embelishments I'm just listening to whistle music to get some ideas about what other people do for embelishments.

Listen A LOT, play. Listen some more, play. Rinse and repeat until you've got it. If the tune is too fast for ya, use windows media player to slow it down, or get some other slow downer software.CRC wrote:Yeah, I wouldn't know how to learn by ear. That would be impossible for me! Where would you even start?

I am on day four of the Clarke Tin Whistle handbook I have the D scale memorized and am working on different note combinations. I already read music. I am a bagpiper who can no longer play due to back problems. My biggest problem seems to be over blowing

I started the whistle to produce high octave "voices" in the music I write so I've avoided learning others music to keep my playing "original". I have watched a few online tutorials and I've watched other players to 'get a feel" for the general breakdown but all in all I'm learning only what I hear in my head...
