Just wondering how everyone else is learning to play the whistle. Opinions on the various ways of learning would be appreciated.

By ear. Listening to good stuff, then working at emulating it. In some cases, trying to exactly match, in others, adding my own flair.

by ear, me too, it must be a tune you know very well, one that you really love, then learning to play it just by listening to it isn't all that hard.

Mainly from listening to CD:s, records and tapes, and to some extent going to concert. Then I write down stuff i really like and work on. I´ve also got some tune collections. But I think the best way to absorbe a musical style is to listen, listen and listen some more!

By ear and from written notation. I have looked at the tutorials, but the techniques themselves are pretty simple, and don't take a lot of study --- just lots of practice.

It's like sculpting ----- you very carefully DON'T play all of the notes that are not in the tune.

Click on Profile, and add the address of your chosen image into the box, as if you'd add it here in the thread.

Tell us something.: Of course I'm not a bot; I've been here for years... Apparently that isn't enough to pass muster though!

Other: When I started out it was 100% by ear. I have, in the past, used tutorials and internet sites (such as C&F) for help but it has primarily been by just playing (by myself and with other musicians) and listening to the music that I want to play.

I first learnt with a book, just the fingerings, now I learn more through watching others play at concerts, or listening to c.d's for differnet techinques, and this web site has helped quite a bit as well
