Do looks matter to you?
I like to have my oldies (I still have my first: a very well used Clarke original) but I also like the sleek professional look of my Burke DAN. I'm not the biggest fan of brass but I do like the old Feadogs and Generations that look like they've been played for years. I am one of those sentimental fools you hear about in love songs

I like the shiny look. Really just because it is a result of caring for the instrument. Brass will corrode at an alaming rate. "Green rot" (brass rust) is actually a fairly common problem with brass instruments (particularly the ones with lots of bent sections that trap breath vapor condensation).
Keeping the instrument clean is really the best way to lengthen its life.
cheers

There's and old Irish saying that says pretty much anything you want it to.

My main squeeze is an M & E flute. If you look at it up close it more nearly resembles a piece of plumbing than an heirloom. So I guess looks just aren't that big a deal. My fave whistle has a big flattened spot on its backside so it looks odd, but well played.
Guitars are a different story - especially electrics. To Joe Bystander, any whistle or flute looks like a tube. . . that's about it. But show them a strat or a Rickenbacker or a Jazz box and they will immediately make associations and connections.

Who'll be the first to lament the lack of an "All of the Above" option?
I like the worn around the holes look. I think I'm the only one in the
world who approved of the bare metal on Avery's tweaked Waltons.
I have an O'Brien whose nickel-plating is starting to wear off around
the holes, revealing the brass. I dig it, it's a cool look. I should
probably polish the outside with Tarnex or something....
That being said, I think I'd do certain regretable things to get my
hands on one of these (with the bark on):

Yeh. I have a Clare 2-piece and a Doolin 2-piece (both with tweaked Feadog heads). They have "aged" more than any of my other brass whistles - even though some of the others get more play (my Gen E flats, for example).CRC wrote:I like the worn look. I think I've finally achieved this with my clare 2 piece.
Don't have a real preference, so I didn't fill the poll.
I like the aged brass ones, I like the nice, clean Feadog nickels, I like my black Susatos and my ABS/alloy Dixons... I just like 'em all!

I have a bunch of elder trees!
Yeah, Elder. Colin has an update from last July about selling these
whistles, but doesn't seem to be offering them yet, so I guess the
deal's fallen through... Shame. (Colin, Brigitte... any reason to keep
hope alive?)

Worn, definitely. Instead of the first category, I had to pick "other", though, as some of mine also have black electrical tape partially covering a hole here or there to bring a note into better tune.
I think my category would be called "shabby".
