Skyline Chili in Texas

Post by gonzo914 »

This stuff --

Image

I found it in a grocery in Texas. I didn't know they were exporting it out of Ohio.

For those who don't know, Skyline Chili is one of nature's perfect foods. Every nutrient needed to support human life is found in Skyline chili. And for the longest time, it has only bee available in Ohio and bordering states (and maybe Florida).

But now it's in the freezer section at a Kroger in Texas. Hoom-hah!!!

As a bowl of chili, Skyline cannot hold a candle to even the gristliest Texas concoction, let alone gonzo's own homemade chili, which is generally acknowledged to be the best in all Christendom). But pour it over some spaghetti or a baked potato and the whole transcends the goodness of the parts. And Skyline chili has no equal when slathered onto a chili dog.

Be sure to pile on lots of cheese, Gromit.

(No point to this, really; I was just so excited I had to share.)

Note that I said "one of " mature's perfect foods. There are more than one --

Skyline Chili
Lucky Charms
White Castle burgers
Freshly baked bread topped with real butter
Guinness
Oysters on the half shell
Anything made with chunks of beef tenderloin
Worcestershire sauce
Comestibles to be named at a later date

(Caution: Do not try to eat all of these at the same time.)

Note that, out of respect, no lambs were harmed in the exhaustive research needed to develop the above list.

you need a little vocabulary before eating Skyline:

2 way:
chili and spagetti

3 way:
chili, spagetti, cheese

4 way:
chili, spagetti, cheese, onions OR beans

5 way:
chili, spagetti, cheese, onions AND beans

Coney:
steamed hot dog, chili, cheese, onions

Phoney coney:
no hot dog

And the "secret" ingredient in Skyline??????

cocoa!!!!!

P.S. - I actually like Gold Star better then Skyline.

P.S.S. - all of this "chili" comes from a strong Greek contingent that was here in Cincinnati.

edited to add:

White Castles are just plain EVIL - but it's the only thing open other then Waffle House at 3am in the morning.............

And let us not forget the Lo-Carb Coney Bowl -- "Skyline’s original secret recipe chili, three skyline hot dogs and a mound of mild cheddar cheese. Only 3 net carbohydrates per serving!"

Mmmm -- tasty and nutricious and downright good for you, but best avoided by those who have anyone in their family with a history of coronary problems in the last 5 or 6 generations.

We used to have a place here called G.D. Ritzy's. They served hotdogs and spaghetti and stuff with Cincinatti style chili. Man, that was good stuff.

The list is by no means exclusive, so feel free to expand it as you see fit. Come to think of it, fajitas with Skyline chili on top sounds tasty. You bring the fajitas; I'll heat up the Skyline and will look for some cheese.

We had Skyline on a visit to Cincinnati a couple of years ago, and it's really tasty. NOT like Texas chili at all-- a unique flavor all it's own. You can order it here:

Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

And the correct way to order a 4 way is to say "Four way bean" or "Four way onion"

The Coney's come with mustard too.

White Castles give me terrible gas about 6 hours later. It's like clockwork. I cannot have anyplace to go in the evening if I want to eat White Castles.

(this falls under the category of TMI--sorry)

actually - we've had this "standing" invitation which I may not have extended on this board recently.......

Any musician (and I use that term loosely) traveling through Cincinnati is more then welcome to "crash" at the dulcimer flop house (ah - our house). Depending on time constraints, we'll treat you to Skyline (or Gold Star!), or Montgomery Inn Ribs, followed by Graeter's Ice Cream.

We've had quite a few take advantage of our hospitality, I think the farthest so far was from BC. As long as you don't mind a couple of big, drooly dogs (we have 2 boxers) and a 15 year old goofy kid, you are more then welcome. Smokers are welcome (outside only, though - Tom smokes, so you'll have company!) and beer drinking is encouraged (as Tom says, "it's 5 o'clock somewhere" - or is that "Beer is Food"?)

We're on the north/west side of the city, not too far from most of the interstates, and pretty easy to find. The only thing we can't offer is parking for RV's - we're in the city and our driveway is short.

But if you're coming through, do give us a yell.........
