"This low whistle makes you look so male..."
I've noticed that only men play the low whistle, but that's because I haven't seen a woman playing it.
This subject is almost nonsense - but it'd still be nice to know if Mary Bergin for ex. was seen playing a low one.
(Hope it's not some old topic allready)
thanks,
Philip

Take a look at kerrywhistles. In the movie section here:
http://kerrywhistles.com/dl.php?group=20#
And then you will find the titel 'girl with the low D'
It's really beautiful to see that girl play. I like to know her better

I think Mary Bergin has been seen playing a Copeland A..that's like..a half-low or somethingTrip- wrote:I've noticed that only men play the low whistle, but that's because I haven't seen a woman playing it.

Joanie Madden's cd's list her as playing "low whistle" in addition to flute and whistle.

Ladies of the Low Whistle
In our own Dale's interview with Joanie Madden, http://www.chiffandfipple.com/joanie.html, she mentions low G as her favorite as well as collaborating with Pat O'Riordan on a low D design.

There's a reason that Dale's low whistle page

is dedicated to Sigmund Freud.

I play down to low A and G with no difficulty - in fact, I still mostly use fingertips on those because the stretch is comfortable (I have very long fingers).
I'm working on low D, but the problem I find is not the reach (that's ok) but the fact that the wholes are too wide for my really skinny fingers. If I could find a smaller-holed low D whistle I'd have an easier time of it (right now I own a Chieftain and a Susato -- the Susato is slightly easier to play than the Chieftain).

Have a listen to the last track on Mary Bergin's first solo album from the 1970s. She's playing a low whistle there....seems to be around A or G, haven't had time to check.Trip- wrote:This subject is almost nonsense - but it'd still be nice to know if Mary Bergin for ex. was seen playing a low one.

I play Low D, and my 13 year old daughter does too... she's got an absolutely amazing finger spread!
Well... perhaps I should say that I play *at* the low D... I don't think my playing would pass muster for any level of expertise.
