Improve Your English

Post by Bloomfield »

Everyone has probably seen this already. But still, it's helpful to be reminded of how important good English is.

Happily, I can say "thinking."
Unhappily, I am congenitally unable to roll r's, which is a liability in the study of español.

Ah, but at least you can see the value of learning other languages. How much happier the scenario would have been if the gents in the thinking ship had thought to acquire "good"--or any--German.

Well, I know. I thought the movie showed how important good German is. I think we are having our legs pulled.

Hehe. Actually, nobody with such a poor english would get a job like that here ;)

But the example is quite nice to show that knowing some english isn't a bad idea these days.

It was my inability to roll r's (as well as my innate snobbitude) that led me to study French, instead.

While we're on the topic:

It is not good English to begin or end a sentence with a "but". Leaving that aside for a minute, there needs to be a comma after your "but". Furthermore, "of how important XXX is" should be replaced by "of the importance of XXX".

In summary your sentence may be better expressed as,
"Nevertheless, it is helpful to be reminded of the importance of good English." Shorter, sweeter and better English.

I trust this reminder is within the spirit of your own reminder.

BTW, I cannot speak German.

I'm sinking that's pretty funny, Bloom!

A lot of Puerto Ricans pronounce the "rr" like an English "h".

Tal, despite the obvious spelling errors in your suggested sentence, I would like to point out that the overuse of prepositional phrases can become tiresome. My humble offering:

"Nonetheless, one can always use reminding when it comes to the importance of proper English."

The sentence is simple and unrepetitive, yet interesting and intellectual.

Con, there was only ONE error, a typographical one, which was corrected a minute after it was made. Please see my post as edited.

Oooooo. I've been taught to stay away from the use of "one". However I do see your objection to the prepositional phrases.

Actually the "but" works if the two sentences are put together.

Everyone has probably seen this, but......
