"Spirited Away" -Despite animated style not always equal to the tale, I like the story of the kid cast upon her own resources: compassion, curiosity, initiative, gumption and sass which together outweigh the glitzy, crass ugliness around her. Good movie on the value of approaching things as would a child.

I was going to put down like three movies... then it kept growing... and now it's absolutely huge. I tried to cut out the ones that have already been said, though.

Amadeus
Sling Blade
Reservoir Dogs
Kill Bill (vol I)
Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street (do musicals count?)
Citizen Kane
The Glass Menagerie (the John Malkovich / Joanne Woodward one)
The Empire Strikes Back
This Is Spinal Tap
Requiem for a Dream
Pi
The Graduate
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Duck Soup
Stand By Me
Harvey (and I don't really care for James Stewart)
The Producers

also,

Good Movies, Better Books:
Grapes of Wrath
Fight Club
Clockwork Orange
oh Lana Turner we love you get up

"To Sir, With Love." Great song, too.
Movies about teachers where, at the end, the violins come up
and the students express their appreciation, indeed, their
love for the teacher, whom they've apparently detested
till now, because now they see how much good he's done them....
well. Lots of luck!

Groundhog Day
Silence of the Lambs
High Noon
Round Midnight
Ray
Citizen Kane
Grand Illusion
The Seven Samurai
Rashomon
The Apu Trilogy
Unforgiven

I think one of the best films I've seen in recent years
was All The Pretty Horses, but the reviewers didn't
like it so well.

The Spy Who Came In From The Cold
To Live and Die in LA
Being John Malkovich
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (great film about the Billy Doolittle
raid on Japan, black and white)
Human Nature
China Town
Easy Rider
Patton
The Hustler
Cool Hand Luke
Butch Cassidy
Hombre
The Verdict
My Cousin Vinny
Harvey
The Wizard of Oz
A Beautiful Mind
LA Confidential

Thanks to Judy in compiling this list.

I wish I could say the same about "All's Quiet on the Western Front", but I thought that they butchered the story to make the movie. I was surprised how well “For Whom the Bell Tolls” covered the book though.

Haven’t watched them in years, and doubt that I could find either on dvd if I tried at the local rental place.
Peace on earth
Silent running

Seems like many of the old movies and music I liked will soon be non-existent either because of obscurity or obscenity like Ralph Bashki’s “Street Fight”.

Surprisingly, I see very SciFi movies on this list. 2001: a space odyssey usually pops up as one of those need to see movies (personally could never stay awake for it) You would think that Scifi movies like AI and Nightfall movies would be fertile ground for incite into the human condition, unfortunately they usually fall very short.

God bless and keep you Peter Sellers!!!!

P.S.- The remake/(prequel?) can't even hold a candle to the classic PP movies. I love Steve Martin's work, but I think this is one that he should not have done. The Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies are classics in modern cinema comedy, and their importance and influence is not to be taken lightly. They helped set a standard for modern comedy. It would be like making a remake of Dr. Strangelove; there are just some things that should not be trifled or toyed with. Iffen' it aint broke, don't fix it!
Had there not been a Peter Sellers original, this movie would have been downright hilarious, but it pales in the inevitable comparison to the original.
