Groundhog Day

Post by Walden »

Happy Groundhog Day, yall! Well, technically it's the Feast of the Presentation.

May all your marmots be contented!

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
A woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood.

Since we haven't had a "real" winter in SW Michigan yet I'm afraid Old Phil will be wasting his time.
I'm no longer trying a new posting paradigm

The TV news anchors around here usually report on the prairie dogs at the Tulsa Zoo (Mohawk Park), though there are real groundhogs in the area, but yeah, it's been a rather mild winter, here, too, save for the drought and wildfires.

It seems we had all our winter in December but, nevertheless, Ontario's own Wiarton Willie will be on the job today giving his opinions about the rest of the so-called winter. WW's own home page seems to be on the fritz so here's an article about him.

You are too pale to live there. You are going to die of skin cancer. You need to move north forthwith.

Off to the woods for to catch a groundhog.
Oh, groundhog.
Run here Sally with a ten foot pole, (repeat)
To twist that whistle-pig out of his hole.
Oh, groundhog.
Here comes Sal with a snicker and a grin, (repeat)
Groundhog gravy all over her chin.
Oh, groundhog.
Look at them fellers, they're a-goin' wild, (repeat)
Eat that hog before he's cooked or biled.
Oh, groundhog.
I dug down but I didn't dig deep, (repeat)
There laid a whistle-pig fast asleep.
Oh, groundhog.
Now the meat's in the cupboard and the butter's in the churn, (repeat)
If that ain't groundhog I'll be derned.
Oh, groundhog.
Well you eat the meat and save the hide, (repeat)
Make the best shoestring ever was tied.
Oh, groundhog.
Look at them fellers, they're about to fall, (repeat)
Eat till their britches won't button at all.
Oh, groundhog.
Little piece of cornbread a-layin' on the shelf, (repeat)
If you want any more, you can sing it yerself.
Oh, groundhog.

It's traditional, but you can thank the Watson family for that version.

Note: even though wombats are marsupials, we cannot condone the attitude to groundhogs expressed in this song.

Today is also Stan Getz's birthday. He would be 79 if he were still alive.

Between Stan Getz and Paul Desmond, I can't decide who did more for my love of music (especially jazz, obviously). Truly an amazing musician.

See, there's another problem with global warming... now we're going to have unemployed groundhogs.

Sure is, Missy. Has me reaching for a guitar or a mandolin. I love that old-timey mountain stuff as much as I love blues, gospel and jazz.

95% of all males rank Groundhog Day in the 10 best movies category. 82% of females are ambivalent to it. Or so my research has suggested. I have found 1 woman who says that it is her favorite movie.
