They sure look a lot like gaskets. I wasn't aware of the similarity of flanges and gaskets. Could aliens have given that knowlege to some forgotten civilization long ago?

I think though...that simple round things, similar to washers, can be called gaskets but are never called flanges.

Still do, in fact, but it's not as fun as it was. You used to have to press your thumb over the read head on the tape.
